This pack contains 3 games bundled onto a single DVD. Each game has a key theme that would loosely fall into the description "Trade, Steal or Conquer". Before I go into detail about each game, I should point out that they are all several years old; don't expect any stunning graphics from this bundle.
Patrician III (Trade)
Patrician III is primarily focussed on trade. You start with a small trading company in a single city and have to expand your influence throughout northern Europe. This primarily involves sailing between one city and another buying goods at low prices and selling for a profit. As your company grows your influence in your home city also increases, allowing you to be elected as Mayor or even "Alderman of the Hanseatic League". There is combat in this game as you try to fight off pirates, but it seems to be a secondary theme to trade.
Tortuga (Steal)
Tortuga was developed by the same company as Patrician III so you will notice a number of similarities in the graphics and interface. However, Tortuga is a much more combat orientated game. You play the role of a ship's captain in the Caribbean during the era of European colonialism. England, France, Holland and Spain are all eager for you to help catch pirates or commit piracy on one of their rivals. You can sink ships, loot them or even capture them and add them to your own fleet. The combat interface seems a little unfair at first as enemies can attack you with 2 or more ships but you can only fight back with 1; however, after you get used to the controls, it becomes easier to take out computer controlled fleets much stronger than your vessel.
Knights of Honour (Conquer)
The goal of Knights of Honour is to be crowned "Emperor of Europe" either by conquest or by convincing enough of your rivals to take you seriously. You can hire up to 9 knights to act as generals, spies, merchants, priests or town governors. You can aid your cause by buying influence or ordering your spies to sabotage your enemy's kingdom, but sooner or later you will have to fight. Your armies can be made up of 10 units (e.g. archers, swordsmen, cavalry, etc.) but always need to include a knight (limiting you to a maximum of 9 armies as you can only have 9 knights). When combat occurs you can take control for yourself in the battle mode or let the computer automatically decide the outcome. The combat interface is much like that in the Total War series, except there are fewer options available here; also, unlike Total War, the game runs in real time so reinforcements for either army can arrive in the middle of a battle. As your kingdom expands it becomes difficult to fight new wars as your 9 armies spread out across the continent suppressing rebellions and repelling enemy raids.
My personal favourite at the moment is Knights of Honour, but there is enough variety in this bundle to suit different tastes or give you something new to try if your tastes change. I wouldn't buy any of these for the original selling price but as part of a bundle they are well worth it.
