Product Description

Product Description

Illuminated manuscripts are widely regarded as beautiful works of art in their own right, but if examined closely, they also reveal a wealth of information about the people depicted within them. Often these images are taken at face value, and assumed to depict everyday clothing at any given time: but illuminators often used dress, and elements within it, to help give nuances to the events they were painting, that contemporary viewers would have understood. Dress historian, Margaret Scott sets about meticulously unraveling the messages about rank, aspiration, belief and occupation encoded within these images. This is the first book deliberately to focus on dress as it is depicted in the illuminated manuscript, and to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of illuminations as source material. Overall, this title provides a visual feast and rich historical source that will prove invaluable to art historians, costume designers and all those interested in this colourful period.

Wonderful, thoughtful, intelligent book on Medieval dress! 18 Jan 2010
By J. Byrne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Margaret Scott is a delightful author who ekes out so much information from the history and images of the time that I find myself re-reading many passages! Her diverse background allows her to give insight not only into what was worn but why and how it was affected by the human influence of the time. Historical clothing books can sometimes be simplistic in their approach but Dr. Scott's book is not. She digs deep and wide to prove an amazing diversity of clothing often not touched on in other treatises.

This book is not large but it is full of beautiful extant images, chock full of information and even fun anecdotes. I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in clothing of this time!

Good survey with excellent pictures 23 Mar 2010
By Catherine Raymond - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Margaret Scott's "Medieval Dress and Fashion" is far from comprehensive. But for the serious student of the period and subject, her book offers interesting insights and a collection of costume-oriented pictures from period art that is hard to match anywhere else for the price. Though it would have been even more informative to feature photographs of some of the surviving garments of the period, Scott's book still deserves a place in the libraries of those interested in western European medieval costume.

"Medieval Dress and Fashion" by Margaret Scott 4 Aug 2008
By "lovemybooks" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
For anyone as crazy about Medieval history as I am, this book is a thrill!
Heaps of full colour illustrations almost on every page, make it a veritable jewel. Margaret Scott's text is easy to read and understand and not a bit "dry" as some historical writers tend to be. She approaches her subject with both gusto and humour, explaining how even the colours of different outfits could denote where one stood in medieval hierachy. Also some of the "fashion fads" were amusing, such as very, very elongated toes on shoes for men, started by one poor soul who had bad bunions, in order to disguise the fact! I am still reading it, and loving every page. I highly recommend it to anyone, particularly those interested in how dress and fashion started and even today, influences how we dress.
