I have read a lending-library copy - this is what I remember of it. At first glance this book will seem to be way off the mark to anyone who has studied medieval costume. However, Dorothy Hartley's theories and the way in which they are presented are useful in making us reconsider the 'facts' that we all accept as sacrosanct. Since this book was originally written in the first half of the C20th, it is also an interesting historical document in itself - throwing light on the art of medieval costumery as practiced more than 50 years ago. Anyone wanting to achieve the 'medieval look' (for a school play for instance) without too much fuss and bother over authenticity will find this book very useful. Serious students of costume may also find some useful nuggets (eg I seem to remember some helpful hints on arranging head-cloths.) Re-enactors may also like to read 'Food in England' by the same author.

This is an excellent and intriguing little book. Although written in the thirties, what Miss Hartley has to say is still useful and relevant. The book is well-illustrated with both photos and drawings, but the author does assume the reader had some knowledge of dress-making. This is part of the attraction - you need to use your noddle a bit! I would say a useful addition to the library of anyone interested in historical costume.

This book is an interesting academic work that is full of useful information but I was dissappointed by the lack of patterns - from the title I expected more detailed patterns from the title.

Nonetheless, mine of information and a good addition to my library.

On first viewing the book I was not impressed. How wrong could I be? this is a great book, giving all the information needed to create a medieval costume, even down to the underwear. If you only buy one book, this is the one to get.
