Product Description

Product Description
With a particular interest in anthropology and the history of medicine, and with ambitions to create a 'Museum of Man', Henry Wellcome (1853 - 1936) built up one of the world's largest but least known museum collections: it has been estimated that in 1930 it was some five times the size of the Louvre. Now scattered among numerous institutions and studied in a wide range of disciplines, the collection spans centuries and continents, and includes both the beautiful and the banal. This book will explore its contribution to contemporary understandings of health and wellbeing, providing along the way an intriguing insight into the history of collecting. Following an introduction to Wellcome and his 'phantom museum', seven lively, personal and thought-provoking essays by experts in each of the fields represented will use different corners of his collection to make connections with contemporary issues and to show how meaning is created from the stuff of the past. Designed to convey the astonishing scale and breathtaking range of subject-matter encompassed by the collection, Medicine Man will be a visual and intellectual feast.

5.0 out of 5 stars medicine man, 28 Aug 2008
By G. I. Forbes (edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This the story of Henry Wellcome (1853-1936) an American pharmacist who set up in 1913 the Museum of Man in London to coincide with the 17th International Congress of Medicine. The museum which continued to expand contained thousands ofc specamins relating to medical history and anthropology. The text deals with various facets of the history of the museumand is excellent but it is the illustrations which are coutstanding, items and artefacts are shone here which are unbelieveable. The book was published in 2003 the 150th nniversy of Wellcomes birth and to coincide with an exhibition at the British Museum.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is this book still relevant?, 13 April 2008
From those who have read this book (I haven't) would you still consider it relevant with the opening of the Wellcome collection in London, now displaying the majority of his collection and becoming very well known? Is there more to this book than the status of the museum? I would just like some feedbock so I know whether to buy it or not.

Tasha.
