Review

"The principal author has extensive knowledge of the plants of this area. The addition of conservation status (threatened, rare, not threatened, etc.) is a welcome and most timely addition. In addition to the many botanical bibliophiles who will snatch up a copy of this book for the sake of adding another fine edition to their library, this book should be considered by those who are in the plant conservation fields, product development business for novel herbal ingredients, as well as the usual libraries, research centers, and other places where high quality botanical literature is appreciated." - Mark Blumenthal, HerbalGram, No. 64 Promo Copy

Product Description

In spite of their unique and important biodiversity, the plants of the Indian Ocean islands region are under-represented in the current literature. Filling this gap, this book provides a scientific evaluation of 350 medicinal plants indigenous to the main Indian Ocean Islands. Some of these plants, especially those found in the Seychelles and Comoros, are monographed here for the first time.

For each plant the following data are given:

  • Botanical description, distribution, and ecology
  • Chemistry of active compounds
  • Pharmacological studies
  • Use in traditional medicine
  • Color photographs and chemical structures

An authoritative reference, the book reflects current interest in traditional medicine and its potential for the development of new drugs. A rich source of ancient local knowledge, Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the Indian Ocean Islands: Madagascar, Comoros, Seychelles, and Mascarenes takes a western approach to preserving both the knowledge and environment of the region.

Just curious why this is free in the UK and everyone else is being charged over $100 for this e-book. I have heard of it being free multiple times, but never here in the US.

1.0 out of 5 stars Over priced, perhaps? 15 Feb 2014
    By Ms. L. S. Aberle - Published on Amazon.com

This book is being occasionally listed among the free books in the UK, but never in the US - where it's $160 or even $200 when not "on sale"... I'm curious as to how ANY ebook is worth that much - especially when the print version appears to be worth around $80... surely an ebook should be worth LESS than the print version rather than more.
