It is difficult to find this information from other sources. This book should be more widely available. The system used is good. Overall will help people make better decisions about whether they should take certain medications and breastfeed. In a lot of cases the information shows/quantifies a very low risk of any harm coming to baby from breastfeeding when mother is taking medication. So I use this information to reasure parents that what they are doing is a healthier option than feeding their baby substitute milk, with its known short and longterm risks.

Judging the risks and benefits of breastfeeding when the mother is taking medication is a complicated business; this book makes it simpler. It is structured in alphabetical order. Each drug is given a classification L1=safe to L5=contraindicated) by the author; he also states whether the drug has been reviewed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Monographs include literature reports, pregnancy risk category (A to X), adult adverse effects, adverse effects reported via breast milk, drug interactions, theoretical infant dose, relative infant dose (as percentage of mother's dose), suggested alternatives, and a small table of pharmacokinetic parameters.

This is a book that is meant for use at point of care, the longest monographs being only two or three pages long including references. It includes most of the commonly-used drugs. Since Dr Hale is American, American drug names are used throughout, but the index also lists trade names and British approved names. It does not include advice on prescribing for particular conditions, and it does not include a lot of discussion about how drugs pass into breast-milk. It's purely there to answer the question "If I give this woman this drug, can she still breast-feed?" And in general, it answers the question very well.
