Review

"Do I need this book, or one of similar quality? There is no doubt; it is an item that I would want available in any multiple-surgery practice I worked in, for all of the staff, for reference, and for quickly resolving differences of opinion. However, I would encourage home reading, too; you will be surprised what updates you need and what grabs your attention."

Primary Dental Care, April 2011

Product Description

This text offers an authoritative account of general medical and surgical conditions as they apply to the practice of dentistry and oral healthcare. Now established as the standard reference on the subject, Medical Problems in Dentistry is essential for students learning for the first time or practitioners needing to keep up-to-date with their knowledge.

In this 6th edition, the content has been rewritten and refocused to place even stronger emphasis on the medical problems that directly influence dental practice. All content has been reviewed by a specialist Advisory Board to ensure complete accuracy and currency of information. Addition of many new images, 'key points boxes' and increased alphabetisation of entries further serve to make the book even easier to use and more relevant than ever.

Additional features include:

. New coverage of key areas of development in medicine including auto-inflammatory disorders, biological response modifiers, craniofacial transplantation, drug reactions, drug-resistant microbial infections, osteonecrosis and immune reconstitution syndrome
. New chapters on alternative and complementary medicine, health promotion, men's issues and occupational health
. New international and national guidelines, recent references and up-to-date websites

Medical Problems in Dentistry 6th edition is ideal for the whole dental team: students, general practitioners, hospital-based staff and candidates for postgraduate exams.

A welcome 4th edition 28 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is a welcome 4th edition of a standard work which now recognises the increased range of medical problems relevant to dentistry with up-to-date information on HIV, Hepatitis and chemical dependency, as well as new chapters on disability, special needs dentistry and socio-economic and ethnic issues. Chapter 23 on "Disability, the young and the elderly" gives a particularly good summary of the conditions a dentist might encounter working in a Community Dental Service. The restructured text means that layout and presentation of information is much improved, providing easier access, and many of the photographs are now in colour. I particularly liked the outline of key points at the beginning of each chapter. This is a good general reference work which should be kept in all dental practices.

As stated in the Preface of the book, its main aim is to provide a basis for the understanding of how general medical and surgical conditions influence oral health and oral healthcare. The book starts off with looking at common medical emergencies that can be encountered in the dental surgery. It then starts discussing each body system with the problems that can occur and their effects on oral health.

I feel that each chapter has `just enough' diagrams and tables. They also have a `Key Points' box, which contains the main issues or main information that should be taken away from that chapter. The chapters are split up into general features and then the clinical aspects/clinical features. The dental aspects are then explained along with the general management of the condition. A great aspect of the book is that at the end of each chapter, there is a `further reading' box, which contains references that compliment the chapter and help to reinforce the information obtained from the chapter. Finally, the book comes to an end with a chapter with synopses of many relevant conditions and those not here are explained throughout the rest of the book.

This is quite a large book with a lot of information but I feel that this information is very relevant and Crispan Scully has successfully improved on the last edition of this book. It is very relevant to dental learning and I feel is an invaluable aid to the BDS course and beyond. It's not really good for quick reference however it is a very readable book with not too many irrelevant words and great diagrams for easy learning.

A `must have' addition to your library!

I have just received the fifth edition of "Medical Problems in Dentistry" which was recommended by a number of lecturers in dental school. In addition to previous edition which covered a large variety of medical problems, this new edition now contains useful information on more recent issues for example newly emerged infections such as MRSA and SARS and life style and health problems associated with different ethnic groups especially refugees. Other interesting information include chapters on women's health (C41), and complementary therapies (C42).
This book offers comprehensive and detailed information regarding medical problems in dentistry, their clinical features and general and dental aspects of each problem. Overall Scully's book is very useful for both dental students and graduates in dental practices.
