Having trawled through the many variations from this seller I finally settled on this non touch screen 16gb built-in memory version. I was looking for a dedicated mp3 player with a decent screen that would play video if required.
The device arrived bubbled wrapped with standard cheap headphones and a standard micro USB cable, no instructions though. The blue colour is darker than the above image but this isn't an issue for me. There's no camera but the TFT screen is quite good and probably better than the touch screen versions. There's a single speaker despite the plural "speakers" in the product description and this is no doubt due to the poor English from the seller. Read on for more of what this really does and doesn't do.
When you begin using this device the first thing you notice is the Chinese characters. The lack of written instructions means setting up was a difficult task to start with but bear with me. I browsed the hard drive on pc and the directory system was fairly obvious. I quickly backed this up in case I decided to try any changes. The first folder titled A288 contains the only instructions, helpfully titled A288.txt This was about as much help as an automatically translated web page, tantalising but ultimately only of minor use. So I returned to the device...
It took me a while to work out the following but I'm putting it here to help anyone else get started.
The one useful feature at this stage is the use of icons so it's fairly obvious what each represents. For your information they are as follows:
MUSIC
PHOTO
VIDEO
RECORDER
FM RADIO
EBOOK
TOOL
BROWSER
SETTING
To navigate there are 5 buttons on this device.
On the front are:
REWIND
M
FORWARD
On the top are:
VOLUME
PLAY
On the left side there are also the following:
MICRO USB SOCKET
POWER SWITCH
SD CARD SLOT
HEADPHONE SOCKET
REWIND and FORWARD will navigate up or down any list.
M is effectively a BACK or CANCEL button.
VOLUME is a single button which when selected allows you to increase or decrease volume using the REWIND or FORWARD buttons.
I eventually managed to navigate into the language settings. To do this go to the last icon SETTING (crossed hammer and spanner). Using the rewind and forward buttons below the screen, scroll down to the 6th item in the list which is LANGUAGE. Press PLAY to select. ENGLISH is top of the list so press PLAY to select. Press M to exit.
The built in 16gb is more than enough for my uses and of course I can always use the SD slot for additional capacity. Data transfer rates are the same as any external device. The device itself does not allow editing or folder creation so you will need to do your file management on pc. You cannot delete files from the device or at least I haven't found a way to do so yet. There is also no TV out capability that I can see unless of course you plug the usb into a TV with usb capabilities to read external memory. The screen does indeed play 16:9 video and in fairly good quality. MP4 files look good and MPG files even better. So far AVI files haven't worked but as this doesn't have any ability to add codecs I am not surprised by this. Basically video is a little hit and miss but most formats work. Pictures seem to work fine and you can indeed set some preferences here.
Finally, the reason I've written so a long review is because ultimately I am a fan of this device. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone but if you're reasonably tech-savvy and have a little patience it's a fantastic buy and incredibly cheap. As my title says, you get what you pay for, well almost. You get a little more in that it's such a cheap solution but you get a little less in that it doesn't quite do everything as advertised. Overall I've rated 4 star which I think is fair for the price. Now if only I could get the suppliers to put a copy of this review inside each package!
