Product Description

Review

'Media and Mental Distress is a very timely contribution indeed and one that must be read by professionals, politicians, the public and, perhaps most important of all, by journalists, editors and programme makers whose responsibility for helping us understand and misunderstand the nature of psychiatric illness can no longer be shirked.'
Anthony W. Clare MD, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Trinity College, Dublin.

This book looks at one of the last remaining "socially acceptable" types of discrimination - attitudes towards people with long and short term mental health difficulties. It covers many topics but in particular, the media and how newspapers and television can change the views held by the general public. However, the writers sadly discover that far from helping, the media perpetuate stereotypes and a culture of fear surrounding mental illness. One of the worst mis-conceptions - that mentally ill people will be violent - is completely taken apart.

The book shows the reader what he/she can do to help stop prejudice. I would recommend this book to anyone who actually cares. After all it could be you next.
