Review

Praise for the first edition:

"Gauntlett’s optimism is infectious, the subject matter engaging, and, as a result, the book is difficult to put aside. It is a thoroughly pleasurable introduction to the ties between self-identities and representations of gender in media." - Anne E. Lincoln in Journal of Consumer Culture (2003)

"Brings the theory of popular culture to the widest possible audience ... Delightful and provocative." - Charlie Peverett of HERO (2002)

"The value of Gauntlett's work is his engagement with feminism and issues of masculinity in ways which...appeal to students." - Nic Groombridge, St Mary's University College

Product Description

Popular media present a vast array of stories about women and men. What impact do these images and ideas have on people’s identities?

The new edition of Media, Gender and Identity is a highly readable introduction to the relationship between media and gender identities today. Fully revised and updated, including new case studies and a new chapter, it considers a wide range of research and provides new ways for thinking about the media’s influence on gender and sexuality.

David Gauntlett discusses movies such as Knocked Up and Spiderman 3, men’s and women’s magazines, TV shows, self-help books, YouTube videos, and more, to show how the media play a role in the shaping of individual self-identities.

The book includes:

  • a comparison of gender representations in the past and today, from James Bond to Ugly Betty
  • an introduction to key theorists such as Judith Butler, Anthony Giddens and Michel Foucault
  • an outline of creative approaches, where identities are explored with video, drawing, or Lego bricks
  • a Companion Website with extra articles, interviews and selected links, at: www.theoryhead.com.

David Gauntlett's Media, Gender and Identity is a fascinating and refreshing take on a subject one would imagine to be exhaustively explored by other academics. He is strides ahead of many of the other writers in this field as he combines an accessible overview of the key topics and concepts, whilst maintaining an enjoyable and illuminating read throughout.

Gender studies often tend to suffer from a bone dry and dense style of writing but Gauntlett consistently maintains humour and clarity.

This book is perfect for students looking for an accessible introduction or for those interested in the topic but looking for a pleasant read.

Media, Gender and Identity: An Introduction (2nd ed.) 29 May 2009
By S. Munchow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The language is accessible and the ideas enlightening, (although the author has a terribly annoying fondness for the word 'whilst'). I am just a little over half way through the book, but I am pleased so far at what seems to be the conciseness of this overview of gender, media and identity. This book is perfect for a beginner like myself.

Very Good 31 Jan 2010
By Erika L. Minjarez - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had to order this book for school and decided to order online because the price was much cheaper than that at the bookstore. I got supersaver shipping (which helped a lot) and I got my book before classes started.
