    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The Wii is not a Media Centre and this software will not turn it into one! Media Centres are something of a jack of all trades; they can't quite work out if they are computers, video game consoles or DVD players. The basic idea behind a Media Centre is one single device that handles all of your multimedia. The technology has come a long way in the past few years with the likes of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 fitting the bill nicely. However, Nintendo never intended the Wii to serve such a purpose; it's not high definition and does not have either optical or digital outputs.

However, this lack of suitability has not stopped X-OOM from trying to convince us that it can easily be turned into one - it can't. All this software achieves is to turn the computer it is installed on into a web server; the web server software will then scan the computer and catalogue your media for you.

Once that is done you are ready to fire up the Media Centre on your Wii, this is accessed via the Internet Channel, typing in an address in the manual will then take you to your Media Centre home screen and you can begin to browse your media. The screen looks a bit like Microsoft's Windows Media Centre and works like a web page.

It is then you realise just how unsuitable the Wii is for this purpose - fair enough it does just about work but the performance and quality of the results will make you wish you had saved your money! It really is a crude gimmick - not a serious Media Centre. If you really do want a games console to use for this purpose then buy one that has the capacity and features to do it properly. Steer well clear of this pointless product from X-OOM!

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I really had hoped to be writing something a little more positive than this, but having just spent the last couple of hours of my life with this program (hours I can never get back I might add) I can honestly say this is one of the worst professionally released software applications I have ever come accross.

I had high hopes that this software would finally bring the wii up to a similar standard to the competition in terms of media capabilities, but sadly it was not to be. Everything started out looking really positive, easy to install, nice easy to use setup wizard to add your media..nice quick search of the PC for your media files and you can watch with glee as all those lovely folders of media are found on your harddrive. Once the wizard has stopped however the illusion is quickly shattered and you begin to realise just how awful this program actually is.

The first thing I noticed is that despite finding my video files (AVI) it did not add them to the library. So I tried adding some sample WMV files as a test, but once again it recognises them but won't list them as available content and despite trying numerous things I was still unable to get them to register. All my JPEG and MP3 files registered ok though so I guess that's something, So I decided to use the "Start Media Centre" option to get going but half the screen was missing at the bottom so I was unable to login without completely closing down the program and opening it again...how annoying especially as this turned out to be a fairly regular problem.

So anyway, next I hopped onto the Wii web browser and was able to connect to the server very easily. First I tried a slideshow, this wasn't too terrible to be fair, images were of passable quality but could still certainly be better. I then tried the MP3 option, which was terrible...slow, awkward to use and the sound quality wasn't exactly fantastic either. Finally I tried the TV and Radio options..which both contained channels I had never heard of and were poor quality in terms of both content and picture.

If there were not already enough negative comments, here are a couple more. This software is for installation on a PC, not the Wii and not for MAC, LINUX or any other platform for that matter...this means you have to have a PC to use this software. Not only that you also must have the Wii Opera Web browser, which is fine if you downloaded it in the early days of the Wii, but if not you will have to buy it from the shop channel.

Overall, this program is a waste of money, it won't do half of what you want it to do and when it does work it works either averagely or badly...sorry X-oom, you have to do MUCH better than this

    Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The media centre did just about function as described - so appears to have got through the previous release operability issues.

However - maybe it does what it says - but is that really worthwhile?

It basically uses the Wii internet channel (which you need to purchase with Wii points) to connect through to a web server - which is the program running on your PC - so also needs to have an internet connection.

On the Wii - the photo's stored on the connected PC were visible all ok - albeit a little slow, and the quality looked much reduced. The moving between folders is a bit chunky. I'd rather copy pictures onto a SD memory card and use the Wii reader and functions.

Music- it did index -and I could select tracks to play via Wii - but it didn't seem to show the title/albums without clicking individual icons under the alphabetical index, so not something to be done quickly and it could be quite a tiresome thing to do each time you want to listen to a particular track.

Tried the web TV - mostly couldn't stream quick enough.

With the Wii Internet channel I can already use the Wii browser to watch TV on i-player, and see Youtube, and photo sites - which does put in question the point of this product, almost like doubling up on a already good product.

The other side effect I can't live with is the performance degradation on the PC running the web service. Even when the product is set into "sleep" mode (which should only then run when media is requested), my CPU monitor showed mediacentre often running at>50%. This actually slowed the mouse and keyboard response down noticeably - the PC isn't high end spec - but this product shouldn't be this heavy on it.

Maybe it does what it says - but only 2 stars as you have to question why not using the in-built Wii features. Buy a few 2Gbyte SD cards instead, cheaper in the long run, plus better than the surplus piece of software.
