Product Description

Calma is the ideal alternative to breastfeeding for mothers who want to give their babies breastmilk.

With Calma, babies do not have to change their natural feeding behaviour. Whether you breastfeed or use Calma - the milk only flows when the baby applies vacuum. Breastfeeding is always best for your baby, but sometimes it is not possible to breastfeed naturally. Calma provides a solution to this.

- Enables babies to maintain their natural feeding behaviour learned on the breast - Babies can drink, breathe and pause regularly- Supports an easy transition from the breast to the teat and back- One size is sufficient for the entire breastfeeding period, just as in nature - The unique feeding solution for your baby--it is recommended that you introduce a teat when breastfeeding is established

Why Calma?

Calma’s latest studies with researchers from the University of Western Australia show that creating a vacuum is essential to successfully breastfeed. Babies learn very early on that they have to produce a vacuum for the breastmilk to flow. Their natural way of sucking requires intensive work during breastfeeding!

Calma--the unique breastmilk teat for your baby

For a mother looking for a solution to feed her child breastmilk, Calma is ideal. Calma was developed based on the results of Calma’s studies with the University of Western Australia. That's why Calma is the unique teat for babies who are being breastfed with breastmilk, as it allows them to suck, swallow and breathe, as learned on the breast. Whether you breastfeed or use Calma, the baby has to create a vacuum for breastmilk to flow. As soon as the baby pauses, the flow is stopped; this is also the way with breastfeeding.

Similar to breastfeeding your baby can

- Drink, pause and breathe in its natural rhythm - Create its individual vacuum through a combination of tongue and jaw movements - Retain its natural way of sucking, which supports an easy transition from breastfeeding to breast milk with Calma and back to breast

Tips for using Calma

It is recommended that you use Calma exclusively from the first bottle feeding and only for breastmilk. You may need a little patience until Calma will be accepted by your baby. It is the first time that your baby comes in contact with an artificial material instead of the familiar breast. Everything is new for your baby and they cannot smell you and your milk as with breastfeeding. To encourage your baby to open their mouth to take Calma, stimulate the lip as you would with breastfeeding.

Handling Calma hygienically

Calma can be assembled in a very hygienic way

- Take the silicon teat - Turn the bottom edge upwards and do not touch the tip and place it on to the top- Flip the edges down - Put the top onto the base

Warming milk

Warm the milk with the multi-lid on, then put Calma on just before feeding.

Medela Calma Feeding Solution

Calma is a feeding solution designed for breastfed babies. It does not interfere with breastfeeding, and lets your baby feed in a similar way that it learned at the breast. The Calma method is just like breastfeeding, because your baby:

▪ Can drink, pause and breathe in a natural rhythm, remaining calm and settled, just like on the breast

▪ Needs to create a vacuum to start the milk flow, just like he/she does while breastfeeding

▪ Continues its natural way of sucking, allowing an easy transition from breast to Calma and back to breast again

Calma helps the baby to avoid ingesting air during the feed with a specially designed venting system. While the principle of venting is similar to other teats, Calma is regulated by a venting system that works every time, regardless of how tightly it is secured to the baby feeding bottle. Babies will be more likely to feed calmly, in their own natural rhythm.

medela feeding system, medela teats,

How is Calma different from other teats?

Each baby can synchronise individually with Calma. When breastfeeding, each baby’s natural rhythm for sucking is unique but they all need to create a vacuum to remove milk from the breast Calma also allows the baby to keep its own, natural rhythm of suckling and to create a vacuum for the milk to flow. This similarity between breastfeeding and suckling with Calma means that the baby can easily return to mother’s breast and enjoy breastfeeding benefits and bonding for longer.

In contrast, conventional nipples change the mechanics of how your baby feeds, so it has to learn a new feeding method. As this usually requires less sucking effort, your baby may find it easier and over time be unwilling to go back to breastfeeding which requires more effort.

One size and shape fits all. The flow, shape and length of Calma are designed to suit your baby's needs as they grow. With Calma your baby can continuously adjust the feed to their changing needs. So instead of comparing and searching for different teat shapes and sizes, you can buy the one-size-fits-all Calma. Just don’t forget to replace Calma every three months to ensure the highest hygienic standards for your baby.

Tips and Tricks to Support of New and Experienced Mums

It’s quite normal for your baby to be a bit fussy in the beginning when introduced to Calma; after all, this could be the first time it has come into contact with something other than the mother’s breast. While to us Calma looks perfectly normal, to your baby, it doesn’t smell, taste or feel like its mother’s breast. So have patience and try these tips:

▪ Let another adult (other than the mother) do the first feed with Calma.

▪ Hold your baby in a different position to how it feeds at the breast to establish a new way of feeding

▪ Dip the tip of Calma’s silicone part into the expressed breastmilk before starting the feed

▪ Hold Calma at an angle of about 45 degrees to your baby’s lower lip

▪ To encourage your baby to open its mouth to take Calma, stimulate the baby’s lip as you would with breastfeeding

▪ When your baby opens its mouth, place Calma on the tip of its tongue and do not push Calma in - your baby will take Calma in as far as it needs, just as it learned on the breast

▪ During the entire feeding process, leave Calma in the position your baby has chosen and do not interrupt the process

Don’t give up on Calma as it may take several tries for your baby to learn how to use it. If your baby has already used another teat, be aware that Calma works differently. Calma’s milk flow is controlled by the interaction between the way your baby sucks and the milk-flow control system. It is quite unlike a conventional teat – so just be patient.

A Feeding Solution Developed with Breastfeeding Experts

Studies by researchers from the University of Western Australia showed that creating a vacuum is essential for successful breastfeeding. Babies learn early on that they have to produce a vacuum with their sucking in order for the breastmilk to flow. This same natural way of creating a vacuum when sucking also applies when they use Calma. Before the Calma was released, the researchers examined it and verified its similarity to breastfeeding.

I can honestly say I struggled for a long time trying out every bottle for my little man and it cost me a lot of money when really I should have just bought this bottle to begin with! I now have two and my little boy is 14 months and I'm still breast feeding him but this bottle was a god send! Thanks to Medela for creating such a fabulous great quality bottle! 100% recommend this!

This product is fantastic. Used the smaller 150ml bottles when little one was small.
Great for mums who are weaning from the breast to the bottle. My baby refused so many other named bottles. Although expensive these are truely worth every penny! This product was recommended to me by many breast feed mums.

Love this bottle! Baby loves it too. Mimics breast by making the baby suck and chomp on the bottle to get the milk out. My baby is tongue and lip-tied and this is the only way we have been able to successfully feed and increase his weight until his surgery. I can't recommend it enough. The 250mL bottle is a good size for midnight pumping sessions too. Love love love it.

I have used the calma teats so that I can express and leave my son with someone else for a few hours. He's happy to switch between this and back to breast. Very pleased with it.

After much reading to see what the best bottle was for a breastfed baby I thought I would give this a go. I would like to have said this is good value for money and does what it's supposed to; especially as some babies are difficult to wean onto a bottle, but....I tried this as my baby girl had a tongue tie and until this was treated I was expressing. I found that due to her tt she was sucking a lot harder therefore constantly taking too much and choking due to the vacuum in the teat. I now only use the bottle for expressing large amounts as she rarely feeds via bottle now, but when she does it's with the standard medela teat!
I'm not saying this is a poor product as I get on well with other medela products. But for my baby it was no good. I wouldn't recommend this for tongue tied babies!

By Mr. P. T. Whaley on 23 Jun. 2014
My baby was given breast milk from birth. In the first week this was given in syringes and then cups and then finally my baby took to the boob at around a week. At 6 weeks I was looking for a bottle that I could use occasionally, to give expressed milk to my baby and still breast feed as well. This bottle was advertised as being close to the normal way a baby would feed from the breast, as they have to suck to get the milk to come out of the bottle. I tried a normal tommie tippie bottle and the milk came out too fast causing my baby to splutter and cough.
After about 20 seconds of protest, my baby started to feed no problem. I was concerned I about the teat as it seemed to go into the babies mouth a long way, but didn't bother him at all. Don't know if that's my baby ( he seems to have coped with everything I have given him (apart from my boob!) ) or the bottle, but it worked well for us.

I initially loved it when my baby was on SMA. Since I changed to Aptamil the bottle has produced lots of bubbles and I had to buy Dr Brown's natual flow instead.
