Product Description

Product Description

Calma is the ideal alternative to breastfeeding for mothers who want to give their babies breastmilk

With Calma, babies do not have to change their natural feeding behaviour. Whether you breastfeed or use Calma - the milk only flows when the baby applies vacuum. Breastfeeding is always best for your baby, but sometimes it is not possible to breastfeed naturally. Calma provides a solution to this.

  • Enables babies to maintain their natural feeding behaviour learned on the breast
  • Babies can drink, breathe and pause regularly
  • Supports an easy transition from the breast to the teat and back
  • One size is sufficient for the entire breastfeeding period, just as in nature
  • The unique feeding solution for your baby--it is recommended that you introduce a teat when breastfeeding is established
Baby with Calma
Calma allows your baby to drink, pause and breathe in its natural rhythm

Why Calma?

Calma’s latest studies with researchers from the University of Western Australia show that creating a vacuum is essential to successfully breastfeed. Babies learn very early on that they have to produce a vacuum for the breastmilk to flow. Their natural way of sucking requires intensive work during breastfeeding!

Calma--the unique breastmilk teat for your baby

For a mother looking for a solution to feed her child breastmilk, Calma is ideal. Calma was developed based on the results of Calma’s studies with the University of Western Australia. That's why Calma is the unique teat for babies who are being breastfed with breastmilk, as it allows them to suck, swallow and breathe, as learned on the breast. Whether you breastfeed or use Calma, the baby has to create a vacuum for breastmilk to flow. As soon as the baby pauses, the flow is stopped; this is also the way with breastfeeding.

Similar to breastfeeding your baby can

  • Drink, pause and breathe in its natural rhythm
  • Create its individual vacuum through a combination of tongue and jaw movements
  • Retain its natural way of sucking, which supports an easy transition from breastfeeding to breast milk with Calma and back to breast

The perfect latch onto Calma

Tips for using Calma

It is recommended that you use Calma exclusively from the first bottle feeding and only for breastmilk. You may need a little patience until Calma will be accepted by your baby. It is the first time that your baby comes in contact with an artificial material instead of the familiar breast. Everything is new for your baby and they cannot smell you and your milk as with breastfeeding. To encourage your baby to open their mouth to take Calma, stimulate the lip as you would with breastfeeding.

Handling Calma hygienically

Calma can be assembled in a very hygienic way:

  • Take the silicon teat
  • Turn the bottom edge upwards and do not touch the tip and place it on to the top
  • Flip the edges down
  • Put the top onto the base
Warming milk

Warm the milk with the multi-lid on, then put Calma on just before feeding.

Our son was born 4.5 weeks prematurely and spent 2 weeks in the NICU. I wanted to breast feed him, but was having a difficult time recovering from the C-section, so he was immediately given formula fed formula by bottle and I nursed him whenever I was there. He wasn't a strong drinker because his jaw was immature and when we got him home, we quickly became frustrated trying to get him to nurse. He happily waited for the bottle where the formula just flowed into his mouth. Our midwife recommended the Calma nipple to remedy the situation. She told us it was new and that she'd seen it at a conference recently. Although it was more expensive than all the other bottle sets we'd seen, we bought 2 and have never looked back. Due to the thin membrane in the Calma, he has to work for his milk just like he has to when he is nursing. We went from giving him formula 9 times a day to twice a day and the rest of the time he nurses. Since he always had a great latch, I credit the Calma nipple for improving our situation. He goes back and forth between the two with ease and his daddy can bottle feed him at any time without a struggle. Although Medela recommends that breast feeding already be established before using this nipple, it helped us to establish breast feeding. I highly recommend this product!!

We were a bit late on the band wagon for introducing something new and at first it didn't look like it was going to be a successful trial. I think it would have been more successful, had we introduced the Calma to Little E at around 8 weeks I think she would have been a lot happier and more open to 'something a little diffrent'. At 6 months old, Little E is not easily fooled and although the same sucking technique is used with the Calma as on the breast, the feeling of a nipple and a teat are very different and she knew something was amiss. The trick for us was to allow Little E to hold the bottle and have a play with it. Eventually she did start to put the teat in her mouth and within a couple of days she began to suck on it. The milk coming out did take her by surprise at first but now we are well on our way. So, if like us, you are struggling to get your baby on the bottle then give the Calma a shot. Yes, they are a little expensive but if it means you can continue to give your baby breastmilk whilst you are apart then surely it's worth a few extra pennies

We bought this teat as my son had been 100% breastfed from birth but we wanted to be able to give him milk from a bottle occasionally so that I could be away from him now and again (we have a baby who eats once an hour on the hour...), and also so that Dad could join in the feeding. This teat was advertised as being very similar to breastfeeding so least likely to interfere with that.

However, our son disliked this immensely and every attempt to feed him from it led to ages of screaming. Hard to say exactly why but part of the problem seemed to be that once he started sucking the milk flowed too fast and he ended up choking quite often, which obviously none of us enjoyed. Even when we could get him to drink the results were usually more milk all down him that in his tummy - the technique is apparently slightly different to a breast as he just cant seem to get the milk to stay in his mouth, which is not a problem he has when breastfeeding!

Also, from a purely practical perspective, there does not seem to be any easy way to get a little milk out of the teat to test the temperature when you are warming it. The only way to test is to suck from the teat yourself which is not much fun unless you like the taste of breastmilk, and also somewhat unhygienic if you have a cold or anything.

It seems from the many positive reviews that most babies love this teat, but just a warning that not all of them do!
