Product Description

Product Description

Calma is the ideal alternative to breastfeeding for mothers who want to give their babies breastmilk

With Calma, babies do not have to change their natural feeding behaviour. Whether you breastfeed or use Calma - the milk only flows when the baby applies vacuum. Breastfeeding is always best for your baby, but sometimes it is not possible to breastfeed naturally. Calma provides a solution to this.

  • Enables babies to maintain their natural feeding behaviour learned on the breast
  • Babies can drink, breathe and pause regularly
  • Supports an easy transition from the breast to the teat and back
  • One size is sufficient for the entire breastfeeding period, just as in nature
  • The unique feeding solution for your baby--it is recommended that you introduce a teat when breastfeeding is established
Baby with Calma
Calma allows your baby to drink, pause and breathe in its natural rhythm

Why Calma?

Calma’s latest studies with researchers from the University of Western Australia show that creating a vacuum is essential to successfully breastfeed. Babies learn very early on that they have to produce a vacuum for the breastmilk to flow. Their natural way of sucking requires intensive work during breastfeeding!

Calma--the unique breastmilk teat for your baby

For a mother looking for a solution to feed her child breastmilk, Calma is ideal. Calma was developed based on the results of Calma’s studies with the University of Western Australia. That's why Calma is the unique teat for babies who are being breastfed with breastmilk, as it allows them to suck, swallow and breathe, as learned on the breast. Whether you breastfeed or use Calma, the baby has to create a vacuum for breastmilk to flow. As soon as the baby pauses, the flow is stopped; this is also the way with breastfeeding.

Similar to breastfeeding your baby can

  • Drink, pause and breathe in its natural rhythm
  • Create its individual vacuum through a combination of tongue and jaw movements
  • Retain its natural way of sucking, which supports an easy transition from breastfeeding to breast milk with Calma and back to breast

The perfect latch onto Calma

Tips for using Calma

It is recommended that you use Calma exclusively from the first bottle feeding and only for breastmilk. You may need a little patience until Calma will be accepted by your baby. It is the first time that your baby comes in contact with an artificial material instead of the familiar breast. Everything is new for your baby and they cannot smell you and your milk as with breastfeeding. To encourage your baby to open their mouth to take Calma, stimulate the lip as you would with breastfeeding.

Handling Calma hygienically

Calma can be assembled in a very hygienic way:

  • Take the silicon teat
  • Turn the bottom edge upwards and do not touch the tip and place it on to the top
  • Flip the edges down
  • Put the top onto the base
Warming milk

Warm the milk with the multi-lid on, then put Calma on just before feeding.

Great Product 20 April 2011
By Anon
I was breastfeeding & decided to combine feed with the bottle which was a slight struggle at first.
However, as soon as my DD was familiar with the bottle then she took it very well.
The calma is great as the baby has to work for the milk same as for BF.
They also have control over how much milk they want.
I would highly recommend this product as I know other Mothers have tried similar products & they still
have many problems.
Definitely worth the extra money.

My husband found this teat while I was still in hospital, having been told that we would have to supplement any milk from breastfeeding with formula or expressed milk as our daughter had lost too much weight in the first few days. We were both quite worried about this having a negative impact on the breastfeeding, as normal teats are much easier for a baby than the breast. However, this Medela teat seems to be fitting very well with breastfeeding, and we're not having any issues so far with her prefering the bottle to the breast, and happily takes milk from either. Hopefully in time we can do away with the bottle feeding altogether, but at least we know we have a fall back position that won't destroy all the hard work of getting breastfeeding established.

I've been trying to work this in with my son for nearly three weeks now, since he was just over six weeks old. He usually gets about a quarter of an ounce with each pull, and he can never suck more than two times before he pulls away again because he can't swallow fast enough. I can't imagine that he'll learn to adjust his power to the nipple. We're going to keep trying for a couple of weeks, but my hopes are waning. I also had to pay over-seas shipping since Medela doesn't sell this product in the U.S.

A waste of money
I tried to feed my baby expressed breast milk from this teat/bottle but she couldn't latch on and became very distressed. Read more

Not very useful
My baby didn't like this teat at all. I tried to use it several times without success. I ended up using regular teats from Avent and Dr. Brown's which worked perfectly.

We have been feeding my baby expressed milk on occasion since she was 3 weeks old, but we didn't discover this teat until she was just over 3 months old. Read more

Slows down feeding and reduces wind
We use this occasionally in conjunction with breastfeeding and it works very well. Our 8 week old daughter takes expressed milk slowly and gets hardly any wind. Read more

The alternative
The teet is as recommended by medala for breast fed babies who need expressed milk for whatever reason, still to use ours effectively but we now have 3 of these.

Best bottle nipple ever!
My daughter was born with latching difficulties (aren't they all?) and I had milk production problems, so bottle feeding was something we launched into pretty early. Read more
