Product Description

Product Description

The Medela PersonalFit Breastshield Small is for smaller than average nipples--because one size does not fit all. Medela's wide range of PersonalFit breastshields allows mothers to choose the breastshield that is the right size for them, to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency when pumping. Designed for individual maximum comfort, personalised breastshield size for most comfortable pumping, maximum output, optimised breast emptying. Made from 100% Bisphenol-A free materials for the health of your baby.

The right breastshield size and a proper fit avoid compression of any milk ducts during pumping. As a consequence the mother is given the best chance of protecting of her milk volume, optimising breast emptying, preventing nipple trauma and pumping with comfort. This will help a mother to maintain her milk production and support her lactation. Using a too small or too large breastshield may lead to impaired milk removal because milk ducts could get blocked or milk ejection inhibited. Over time, this can result in reduced daily milk output, which will decrease milk production and can lead to early weaning. Friction around the nipple and/or areola can cause discomfort and trauma which may cause a mother to only pump infrequently. Again, her milk production is jeopardised. Tissue breakdown due to nipple trauma carries the risk of infection and mastitis.

Looking at the standard size of this breastshield, I suspected it would be too big for me, but this small size is perfect and therefore very comfortable to use. By the way, top tip: If you are worried about friction between the nipple and the breastshield, just use a bit of Lansinoh nipple cream to provide lubrication that is safe for your baby still.

Very happy 17 Dec 2010

I'm glad I bought this as it is now much more comfortable to express now that I have the correct size shield. I get a lot more milk out too. I could probably even go smaller again, but this is the smallest they make.

No good 4 Nov 2010

The Medela Pump In Style Advanced Dual Electric breastpump comes with softfit 24mm breastshields. I didn't find them comfortable, the suction was low and the breast milk kept leaking out. After reading further information on the Medela website, I bought small and large personalfit breastshields. The small breastshield hurt and I only used it once. The large breastshield allowed the milk to sit around the breast instead of through the funnel and this caused a reduction in the suction. Periodically I had to take the breastshield off, wipe with kitchen towel and then re-attach to the breast. I'd get a good flow for about 30 seconds, then no suction at all.

Before using Medela I was using the Tommy Tippee electric breast pump. I liked the pump and it cost nearly £200 less than the Medela. I found it comfortable and it didn't hurt at all. I was able to express around 2oz from each breast. But the tube kept getting condensation in it and on some occasions milk. After that happened the suction went way down. It was good while it lasted.

After I read all the brilliant reviews about Medela pumps I thought this would be a good buy. I sadly stopped trying and stopped giving my baby breastmilk.

Medela need to realise that not all women/breasts fit to their sizes.
