A PS2 classic ported to the XBOX...., 26 Nov 2002
Well, I've squeezed so much action out of Timesplitters 2 and Halo now, while throwing the likes of Agent Under Fire and Turok to the side....And I must admit, for those of you looking for more single player action to get your teeth into, well, this could be it! You take teh role of Lieutenant Patterson as he passes through 19 levels to reach his goal, as much destruction with the Nazi warmachine as possible, and grabbing information on the German's new jet propelled fighter plane. Planned to be capable of travlleing 1,000km, at 1,000kph and carry a 1,000lb payload. Hence the name '3x1000'. The game has atmosphere in spades, and a very effective soundtrack. However, there are some features I didn't like: No Blood or gore!?!? Supposed to be a realistic sim, there is no blood or anything! This can actually be annoying when you jump into a room full of Krauts and mow them down with no crimson spray and stains :( Poor multiplayer: Sure, single player is good but for multiplayer mayhem, stick with HALO and TIMESPLITTERS 2! Graphics: Sure these are good for owners of the PS2 but players of the Xbox have the right to better than this... They are still passable, just! Also, you start the first mission as vulnerable cannon fodder running up Omaha beach private Ryan style. This has bags of atmosphere. However, suddenly you are turned into a one man army! On my current campaign I have somewhere in the region of 800 kills. Good for sheer killing fun but more levels which include squad members (Halo anyone!?) would be nice! HOWEVER, there are some truly brilliant levels! The first few are great, from storming the beach and bunker, to battles in shelled out French towns. Another urban warfare mission is included later, and is a touch of sheer class! Another mission which stands out, giving a fantastic feeling of achievement is were you have to covertly take out the guards on a bridge and cross it. Great stuff! I believe that this is worth between 6 and 7, hence my rating of 3 stars. Worth buying as it has plenty of single player life, but without co-op or a decent deathmatch it isn't anything else. If, like me you have played through each of Halos levels almost 10 times each, co-op and single, or Timesplitter's levels about 3-5 times each and want some more action, this is a great purchase for the satisfaction of returning to pump good ole humans full of lead!
