Though pop rather than rock came to dominate the landscape in the two years since Ocean Colour Scene's previous album, Mechanical Wonder is a stirring reaffirmation of the band's core strengths. Frontman Simon Fowler's wistful blue-eyed soul vocals ensure the album's mood of plaintive despair is honestly rather than hysterically expressed. But the group's expansive and crafted musicality provides the perfect counterbalance to the disappointments related in the title track and "Biggest Thing". The summery guitar chords and swaggering rhythm of "Up the Downside", the rich dreamy string arrangement on "We Made It More" and the cucumber-cool blues swagger of "Give Me a Letter" are all examples of traditional rock that thrives on healthy vibrancy rather than cautious conservatism. --Gavin Martin

I am a huge Ocean Colour Scene fan and this is yet another brilliant album they've produced. Though not as good as Moseley Shoals or B-sides, Seasides and Freerides it has one amazing song on, 'Mechnical Wonder', I'm tempted to say that it's better than classics such as 'Day We Caught The Train' or 'Robin Hood'. I didn't really like 'Up On The Downside' when they played it at the Sheffield concert but after listening to it more I think it's a really good song to release after a while out of the highly competitive market they now face. Why on earth OCS do not recieve the publicity or fame Oasis have is beyond me, they are definetly the best thing around at the moment and should definitely be recognised as one of the best bands the 90's has produced.

Well what is to be said. Nothing! This band has to be the most underrated britrock band of the 90s. They're flare is second to none. A truly great effort from one the truly great bands of the 20th century. And once again, they're British!!

In a generation where two-bit pop bands and tuneless nu metallers dominate our airwaves its refreshing to know that there is sill bands out there that can be relied upon to simply write good tunes, tour them and not give a s*** what the press think. OCS are one such band. Ignoring the fact that NME etc would review the new album before listening to it and knowing that they were unlikely to convert the ignorant, OCS return. And what a return it is. Anyone looking for another Molesely Shoals will be dissapointed. 'Mechanical Wonder' is a more reflective, crafted album. The production (handled by the band themselves) is far smoother than on OFTM and the songs are better. 'Biggest Thing' is their best ballad since 'Robin Hood' with 'We Made It More' equally beautiful. The riffs are still there. The Single '...Downside' is proof Steve is still hot and 'Can't Get Back to the Bassline' is equally upbeat. But as a whole the album is more folky and fits into the B sides, Seasides & freerides mould. 'In My field' and 'Sail On my boat' (terrible titles I know) are both exquisite acoustic driven tracks and the title track is impossible not to sing along to. 'Give Me a letter' and 'You are amazing' are the only let downs on an album which proves OCS are still one of Britains best bands and Foxy still one of our best songwriters...

Moseley shoals and Marchin already seem a long, long time ago. People seem to forget that in 1996 OCS were the third biggest sellin act in the country. Read more
