Product Description

Product Description

The Boy Mechanic goes back in time to save the earth... and our future! The latest captivating title in the popular Boy Mechanic series returns to a simpler time when recycling, repurposing and repair, not replace, were a part of everyday life. Back then, no one spoke about going green they just did it as a matter of course. The Boy Mechanic Saves the World (One Project at a Time) comes from that era and presents eco-friendly, thrifty and really cool activities. From turning ketchup bottles into nifty soap dispensers and building a window greenhouse for plants to making a power-generating windmill, it features useful and entertaining shortcuts for conserving our resources.

Really retro stuff 7 May 2010

We got this book to use for our home schooled kids to do some 'hands on' projects. Got sucked in by the '252 Earth Friendly Projects and Tips'. There are some interesting and far fetched projects to try, (build your own lathe), however, most are impractical because the materials needed are not common now: German silverwire for a searchlight, or an 'old iron pail' to make a kiln. There are some quite dated projects also, i.e. how to make an ashtray out of an empty tin can. There are more 'tips' than projects; use baking soda for cleaning walls, cover clothing on hangers with a raincoat to keep the dust off, pull out a staple with a claw hammer. This book is more for reminiscing if you are 60 or older, but not really practical for use today.

These are excellent books, My Son loves them. He is very engaged in building and planning construction projects that are outlined in these books.
