1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't actually work if you follow the instructions..., 17 Dec 2008

Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
I was given this as a gift and looked forward to racing a radio controlled car around the flat. However the instructions are not very clear and there is enough vagueness inherent in them to make constructing the bodywork annoying as you're never quite sure if you've done it right. Certain sections are also very fiddly, and seem like the creators intended you to have three hands. Incidentally, I'm 26 and an experienced model & Lego builder, so it's not as if making complex models is new to me. Compared to say, Lego and Lego Technics, the toy doesn't hold up very well. Lego instructions are brilliantly clear for the most part, and I remember constructing various Technic models far more complicated than this Meccano model at the same age as this model is aimed at (8+ it says on the box).

When I eventually had the bodywork put together, I was surprised to find that it didn't actually fit on the radio-controlled motor/wheels pre-constructed part. Even with a fair amount of "encouragement" (most of the components are thin and purposely very bendy) it wouldn't physically fit onto the motor/wheels, and even with it as close as I could get to the supposed fit, the bodywork was in contact with one set of wheels or the other, meaning it wouldn't actually go anywhere if I'd tried to drive it.

I ended up taking most of the wheel-arch sections off the bodywork before the whole thing fitted together properly, and in retrospect I would have more fun if I'd just ignored the Meccano components and driven the motor/wheels assembly round the floor on its own.

In summary:
- The instructions aren't as clear as they could be.
- It's badly designed and doesn't seem to work when constructed according to the instructions.
- If you really want a radio-controlled constructable/customisable car, go for a Lego Technics set with some of the Power Functions components added in (i.e. motor, IR remote control & receiver).
- If you REALLY want a radio-controlled Meccano car, get this but throw away the instructions and create your own vehicle from scratch to avoid the frustration I experienced.

Ratings:
Fun: 2/5 - it's still a radio-controlled car, and radio-controlled cars are fun.
Educational value: 2/5 - it teaches you that not everything that looks cool on the box is actually as cool as it seems.
Durability: 4/5 - It's mostly metal plates, nuts, and bolts, so it should last a while.
Overall: 1/5 - Man those instructions suck.

1.0 out of 5 stars This barely constitutes being called meccano, 8 Jan 2009

When I bought this, I was under the impression it was a remote controlled meccano set, other sets have motors which provide movement for elements like the arms of diggers etc., this set however is a pre-assembled remote controlled car with some poorly designed pieces of meccano that balance precariously on top. I may as well have just placed the box of disassembled parts on top of the car and driven that around.

If you're after something that you actually assemble to make it go, look elsewhere. This is the equivalent of painting a pre-assembled model.
