4.0 out of 5 stars Glossy Shelf filler, 16 Feb 1999

This review is from: Mecca the Blessed / Medina the Radiant: The Holiest Cities of Islam (Hardcover)
Another book to join the ranks of the thousands already available for the two muslim cities. Quite a remarkable achievement by the photographer to capture the many pictures in the way he did.

I suppose however you want to know what I really thought of it. Well at the price it is not worth it. It needs to be .... cheaper. The pictures are fantastic. The only problem is that there isn't enough commentary, no amazing facts. What you are left with is a picture postcard book with I daresay the same pictures over and over and over again. Everone knows what the Kabah looks like, what we need are words behind the cities. What is the population, where are the best places to buy this that and the other. I does not require pictures to overwhelm the reader, but words.

I do recommend the book, but only if you really want to buy it. I would first recommend the local library. You will only look at the book for a couple of weeks Maximum, then after that it will be in the hands of friends and relatives.

There are pictures of what the other famous mosques in mecca look like. This book should have been called 'The Kabah Shareef, Masjide-Nabwi and the Hajj'.

But at least this book is up to date. Do not be fooled by the two reviews from the USA below (or above). They have just failed to realise that for the money they should get a product worth the price. Just because it is a book on Islam doesn't mean you can't criticise it after all it has been produced by mortals who in the end crossed the line and used the camera to produce images.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photography, 12 Feb 1999

This review is from: Mecca the Blessed / Medina the Radiant: The Holiest Cities of Islam (Hardcover)
I bought this book with a lot of caution. It is expensive. .............

However, once I received it I wasn't dissappointed. It is nice and glossy and filled with pictures from angles never seen before.

My only gripe against this book is that it is full of the usual (not boring) pictures of Mecca and Medina. I think the author should have taken this unique opportunity to include pictures of other places around the two holy cities where significant events took place, so the keen traveller or a person going on Umrah or Hajj can venture out.

Do not purchase this book out of curiosity, you need to have the urge to go before you buy.

A must for all Muslims. A wonderful book that has captured everyone who has picked it up in our house, Muslim and non-Muslim alike. If you can't go then definitely get this book, if you can then this is a wonderful preview. The pictures are beautiful.
