meat. bone. skeletal material.
chapman's first book is a diary of corrupted lamentations on a toxic planet from the dying mind of a schizophrenic computer.
it is an autistic bible for the desperately uncertain.
it is an unreadable map for the inside of an infected nerve cell.
the sun. a goD. freud. narcissus. blood and bones.

no page numbers. no introduction. no contents page. no chapters. no paragraphs. built-then-burnt syntax. no beginnings, middles or ends. no author.

i can't give this book 5/5 (even though it does exactly what it sets out to do), simply because it really is utterly unreadable. if you've arrived at this page from a search for a book about the chapman bros work, look elsewhere, this will be of no use to you.

Unreadable seems to be the consensus on this book. This view is unjustified. Once you get past the randomly(?) inserted text characters and live with the fact that if you lose your place you will never find it again, the book is surprisingly readable. Of course, if you don't happen to be interested in postmodernism, psychoanalysis, US foreign policy and art you might find it something of a struggle, but anyone familiar with Chomsky, Deleuze and Guattari and the Chapman brothers' art should have a look.
As in his art, Chapman ranges from the vitriolic to dense theory to peurile humour, all with deliberately pretensious phrasing. at times, his writing is a joy to read. There is no narrative. This is a good thing.
And for bonus points, it's a great coffee table book. Reshelve Finnegan's Wake and Gravity's Rainbow; your visitors won't even have to read the words of this one to be impressed.
