Book Description

11 Oct 1995
Leading consultants argue that few areas are as important as measurement, yet it remains one of the weakest areas in management today. Based on discussions with managers from a broad range of industries in the US and Europe, this book shows managers how to: Measure what is important to their customers. Motivate their organizations. Identify and eliminate waste of both time and resources.

Product Description

Review

"Finally! a practical book from practical people about management′s most powerful tool – measurement. Hats off to Richard Lynch and Kelvin Cross for a long overdue job well done." Tom Peters. "Outstanding. Finally a book that doesn′t stop at what′s wrong with the traditional ways of measuring success. Richard Lynch and Kelvin Cross present a clear and consistent approach to changing obsolete corporate yardssticks. Measure Up! should be required reading for any manager concerned with improvement strategies and organizational learning." Ray Stata, President, Analog Devices.

From the Back Cover

Measure Up! is a unique blend of theory and practice. It is much more than a critique of traditional measurement systems and offers more than another laundry list of measures. The authors provide dozens of practical examples, tools and worksheets to help you custom tailor new performance measures to suit your organization. This second edition contains a new chapter "Performance that Boosts Employee Morale". This chapter links the performance pyramid to team and individual performance (a criticism of most performance management systems) and shows how measures can help to energize individuals and organizations. Also new for the second edition is a section on the process for deploying goals as well as measures throughout the organization.

First Sentence
Most company performance yardsticks are too short, too rigid, or used more like a strict teacher's ruler - to whack rather than to motivate. Read the first page

Focuses on developing corporate performance measures, specifically a balanced scorecard. Used it extensively while writing my thesis. Readable and usable, a rare combination.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide to Performance Management 30 Dec 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
In this age of activity-based costing and balanced scorecards, there are lots of so-called pioneers. Lynch and Cross are true pioneers. They invented the term balanced scorecard, long before Nolan and Norton. As a process consultant, I use the principles in the book on a daily basis. The representation of the performance pyramid is very intuitive. People unfamilar with performance management concepts can very quickly grasp the interrelationships between strategic, tactical and operational measures. If your budget allows you only one book on performance management -- make this book the one.
