One of the few books I was truly happy with right from the start. The quality is superb, it was a perfect guide for an Architecture student (me) to begin my understanding of Japanese traditional home design.
Also a very good reference for timber frame enthusiasts and those looking at 'simpler', low impact solutions to modern construction.

We cant all rebuild our houses but if you want to come home to peace and harmony I can only recommend this book as a starting point. Its actually extracted from a book which is now hard to find but it reveals the history of how the dimensions of Japanese houses came about and helps place people in that process....the subtleties of scale and of intrige created by following some of the ideas in this book will enhance your mood...I have alwasy worked roughly with wood and stone but this book brings home the importance of balance.....

overall very well written and illustrated; an excellent book to give an insight into the method and theory of traditional design methods. A real contrast to western methods of construction, theory and expectations of domestic design. Volume Housebuilders please note.
