By A. Taylor VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
A collaberation between former members of Toy Matinee and Mr. Mister (Richard Page on vocals) this little heard of album is a true AOR masterpiece. I bought it as an extension of my love of Mr. Mister's work, especially after hearing the unreleased 4th album "Pull". First thing to say is that this isn't at all typical of the Misters. The rock influence is much more subdued and the overall tone is more low key, deeper and more complex wit hless obvious hits. The songwriting, however, never fails to be anything other than compelling and Richard's voice has never been so emotive. The production on some tracks is a little too heavy handed, listening in retrospect, and many tracks take time to grow but it really is worth the effort. There are no easy listening hits like Kyrie and Broken Wings here but perseverance pays off. However, stand out tracks "Freedom Road", the anthemic "Echo Hill", the beautifully poignent "All The Way Home", the deliciously gospel influenced "Trust Somebody" and "Family Tree", a track that, to me, is one of the most beautiful ballades I;ve heard in the last 15 years!!! Fans of quality AOR, where real songwriting is allowed to shine, HAVE to own this album, before all the copies disappear into the hands of people that won't ever sell them again!!! It's just a shame the collaberation was so short lived...they deserved to sell out the Sahara with work of this quality!

Kevin Gilbert has nothing to do with this album! 22 Oct 2004
By Tiki - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Okay folks... We seem to be missing the point & confusing a lot of people out there. This album is by the band THIRD Matinee. Not TOY Matinee. This project was a collaboration of Patrick Leonard (originally of Toy Matinee) & Richard Page (originally of 80's band Mr. Mister). Kevin Gilbert isn't on this record. Richard Page is the lead singer and I personally think he does a great job. The songs are all very pop oriented, but a little too slow at times for my taste. If you own Toy Matinee - you need to own this to see what Patrick Leonard went on to do AFTER Toy Matinee. Did I mention that Kevin Gilbert isn't on this album?

Sticks with me after all these years 18 Jun 2009
By Jim B. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Personal taste is just that,...... Personal. But I would describe this as hopeful, sad, yearning, sly. I'm speaking musically, because I'm not usually a lyrics person. I'm more drawn to how the voice interplays with the other instruments. For me this is consistently more pleasing than Toy Matinee, although there are a couple of songs on Toy Matinee that I like more than anything here. And for what it's worth, The Shaming of the True is my favorite album ever, so I certainly mean no slight to Kevin Gilbert. This is just very well crafted and executed music.

unexpected delight 17 May 2012
By Donald E. Gilliland - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I first heard this album after getting a promo copy at the record shop I worked at back in 1994. I had no idea who these guys were, only later did I find out that Richard Page was the singer in Mr. Mister. Huh? I probably would never have even given this album a chance if I'd known that ahead of time. Shows you my bias. But it also tells you what an unexpected pleasure this album was. I ended up buying a copy and still play it frequently. This is pop ... with soul. And I'm not talking about the popularly accepted idea of "soul music", but music played from the heart and with soul. These songs reach in and touch emotions that most music doesn't. These are songs with unexpected depth and passion. I hope that doesn't sound sappy or trite, because these songs are anything but that. Listen to tracks like "Freedom Land" ... "She Dreams" ... "Family Tree" ... "Echo Hill" ... "All the Way Here" ... and maybe you'll be impressed too. I've turned other friends on to this album and everyone is amazed that they had never heard of this band before. Very sad that albums as stunning as this one died a quick and quiet death at both radio and retail. Don't expect rock & roll or anything "alternative" on here. This is simply an album of extremely well crafted pop songs sung with riveting emotion and clarity; a rare work of beauty.
