Book Description

1 Nov 2011 Kate Linton Series
A grizzly and cold November morning. Detective Sergeant Kate Linton is called on Glastonbury Tor where a young woman has been strangled. Twelve holes are found at the scene, surrounded by wax, evidence of garden flares - the only connection to two other unsolved cases. When another young woman and a TV celebrity go missing, Linton is in a race against time to find the serial killer before he strikes again. But, when her journalist ex-boyfriend is singled out as a chief suspect, Linton feels that events are heading a bit too close to home. A Means of Escape presents an intricate, gripping mystery plot, combined with a focus on the heroine's personal life as she juggles an unwelcome attraction for her good-looking and charismatic superior with her efforts to become closer to her estranged family. A Means of Escape is the first in a series of psychologically driven crime novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book! 16 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I literally couldn't put this book down, i was totally hooked and read it in two days. The storyline is brilliant and i love the way it is written.
The characters are so well written, i really felt like i got to know them, particularly the two main characters Linton and Brown. The relationship between the two of them is really interesting and i am looking forward to seejng more of it in the next book.
I was almost dissapointed when this book came to an end but luckily there is a second book to read. I hope the author plans to write more!
I would definitely recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A means of Introduction ..... 1 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
As a Means of Introduction, this first novel will definitely hook the readers interest! I always enjoy 'discovering' a new author or a new series of books. Occasionally, I'm lucky enough to tick both boxes. Joanna Price's first in a series of thrillers featuring DS Kate Linton does just that.

Set in Glastonbury, Price has managed to steer clear of the tried and tested mystical-murder-and-conspiracy-in-the-New-Age-capital-of-England scenario. She has also managed to make Kate Linton remarkably human. In my opinion, it's very rare for a first time author to be able to craft such a 3-dimensional character. I found myself empathising and identifying with her as well as cheering on her triumphs and cringing at some of her mistakes.

The plot itself centres around a number of bizarre murders, the victims being left on various 'significant' sites, surrounded by a ring of holes. These holes are later found to contain melted candle wax. I refuse to give any spoilers in reviews; l can only say that I couldn't figure out the murderer's motives before DS Linton. A welcome change when you read as many crime thrillers as I do!

The plot is also interwoven with a publicity-hungry reality star trying to boost her profile and Kate Linton's own personal problems. Like roots seeking water, the tendrils of the story all come together to a very satisfying conclusion.

I am eagerly awaiting the next Kate Linton book; after reading A Means of Escape, I'm sure most readers will be too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start to a series 9 Nov 2012
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Kate Linton is a Detective Sergeant living in Glastonbury. A young woman is found dead in strange circumstances in what looks as though it could be some sort of ritual or sacrificial killing. Then another young woman disappears off the streets of the town apparently into thin air. Kate and her boss - Rob Brown - are desperate to prevent another killing especially when they realise that there have been two similar deaths in Avebury. Sam Jenkins needs to be found quickly because she is an insulin dependent diabetic and doesn't have her insulin with her.

I found this an interesting start to a police procedural series. Sam's disappearance and the glimpses the reader gets of her with her kidnapper provide a tense background to the police investigation. I liked the Glastonbury setting with its New Age influence. I thought the characters were well drawn especially the spiky relationship between Kate and her boss. I did get a little confused by the continual changing between the police and Sam's relatives and friends though I could see why it was done. I could have found it confusing because I read the book in small chunks but altogether I found that aspect of the book didn't work for me and it is the reason why I have given the book four stars rather than five.

If you like police procedural crime novels with a different setting then give this one a try - I found it an interesting read in spite of my criticism above and in spite of the rather too prevalent use of swear words. The story kept me reading because I liked the characters and wanted to find out whether Sam was rescued in time. I have just started reading the next one in the series and I'm finding that a good read too.

This is the first outing for DS Kate Linton and her boss, Rob Brown. They are based at Glastonbury, but don't worry, Linton and Brown are very grounded, if not downright earthy. Read more
