Michael Polanyi was in the final years of his life when Harry Prosch suggested they combine their efforts to produce this overview of Polanyi's philosophical work. The final result was published even though Polanyi was not really happy with Prosch's representation.
Polanyi's best known work is The Tacit Dimension which draws on the work of Merleau-Ponty and this provides the philosophical rhizome which runs through 'Meaning' Prosch initially takes Polanyi's thinking as an alternative to the nihilism he sees pervading modern thought and then develops it as a whole philosophy capable of supporting the possibility of religion.
I am not surprised by Polanyi's misgivings prior to publication. Even though he was frail he most likely saw this work for what it is - a kind of pseudo Hegelian phenomonology .
In fact it was Oakshott who had previously looked at Polanyi's work and suggested that his brand of materialism could be taken idealism. ( Derrida would no doubt point toward the door of Plato's pharmacy, but that is another story.) I think Prosch wove Polanyi's text into something vaguely Platonic.
A fascinating bit of post-critical writing.
