Product Description

Product Description

Mean Mode Median revolves around a brother and sister who are at war. They share similar talents – an ability to read and influence others. But they apply their talents in different ways: ways which are intrinsically opposed. And each is fated to suffer the consequences of their actions. Their family, and those whose lives they touch, are caught up in a chain of events manipulated by the pair that lead to tragic consequences.

Insights into personality, power and humanity draw the reader along, tempting and teasing until the plot unfolds and the reader’s view expands with startling clarity. It is the kind of book that you look back on, remember, and savour the resonances of; that you think about long after you have put it down.

“It’s the kind of book that wins prizes, and the wonder is that Aliya Whiteley has had to go the route of independent publishing instead of being snapped up by one of the big conglomerates.” Deborah Fisher, Tregolwyn Book Reviews

“I’ll get straight to the point: Aliya Whiteley is a brilliant writer. There are number of very beautiful and evocative passages in ‘Mean Mode Median’…” David Hebblethwaite

5.0 out of 5 stars A dark, wry treat 27 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Imagine a modern King Lear, with a dollop of Jeremy Kyle and a dark, knowing take on family life. This story from Aliya Whiteley has long been unavailable; fans old and new will be delighted to see it back as an affordable ebook.

Readers of her other work will expect prose of understated precsion shot through with flights of extraordinary fantasy - and they won't be disappointed here.

Aliya Whiteley's work defies easy genre categorisation - and in today's publishing world of pre-packaged and pre-digested brands, that can't be a bad thing. Read something original today instead - read Mean Mode Median.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and engaging 26 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Aliya Whiteley found her voice with this tale of a dysfunctional family and bizarre sibling rivalry. Mean Mode Median's the first long form outing for her trademark black humour and spiky characters, all portrayed with an assured literary voice. Fans of Fay Weldon and Jonathan Coe will find much to admire here. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, Twisted and Clever 9 Dec 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Although the writing style is completely different, this book has the feel of Ian Bank's "The Wasp Factory". It has a dark brooding ness to it, while you are compelled to read on. At times, the reader is made to laugh at situations that perhaps one shouldn't in the everyday while the characters are placed in a very recognisable reality.

Nice twists, clever plot, a great short read!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not your average read. 24 Jan 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
A book that entices you to sort the villains from the simply maladjusted and yet twists and turns so that you cannot.
It's clever but very readable with good insights into how we think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deftly written and tangible characters 17 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The thing you really need to know about this book is that it achieves something which is rather unusual in modern literature. You actually have to get to know the characters and spend time integrating with their lives to get a complete idea of their drives and passions. No easy assumptions to be made here. By the end of chapter 1 I had clear ideas of how the book was and who the characters were. By the end of chapter 2 I had realised they were pre-conceptions and learned a bit more. By the end of chapter 3 I was starting to think differently about a few things and from chapter 4 onwards I finally got the idea, let go and took the time to understand them as people.

To give you an idea of what I mean take Memento. You watch that film and you know precisely what kind of character Carrie-Ann Moss plays. Except that a scene later you have to revise that because you've learned new things. Another scene later and it's all been turned on its head. Ok, it's not such a stark dichotomy here, but it's in that vein.

Life is like this every time you meet someone, remember. Literature rarely is.

Also, not to disagree with the other reviewers but I think some refinement is needed as well because all this talk of how 'dark' the book is doesn't quite nail it. Ultimately this book is about a very strange and hurting family and their friends. There are children who have been raised in a bizarrely grief-struck home, a bewildered father somewhere between repressed and incapable, perfectly normal people deluding themselves and more. These are the domestic wranglings and complexities that eat us all up at some point in our lives. Envy, naivety, desperation, anger, so on and so forth. It's as dark as you and I.

2.0 out of 5 stars Distinctly average 14 Sep 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very disappointed by this book. I did manage to read it all but with gritted teeth and if I had it as a paper copy rather than an as an ebook it would be in the charity bag by now. I found the characters unsubtle and tedious - there was not a single likeable character amongst them. Too unbelievable to be a real exploration of family dynamics, it was not unusual enough to capture the imagination in other ways. I found it rather dreary.
