Synopsis
Director Jacob Estes's feature film debut is a remarkably accomplished coming of age drama about death and consequences. When overweight, emotionally troubled George (Josh Peck) beats up a smaller kid named Sam (Rory Culkin) one time too many, his older brother Rocky (Trevor Morgan) and Rocky's wrong-side-of-the-tracks pal (Scott Mechlowicz) decide to teach George a lesson. Along with their friend Clyde (Ryan Kelley) who was once the brunt of George's violence himself they bring George on a boat trip with a cruel prank in mind. Sam brings his love interest, Milly (Carly Schroeder), who tries to stop the plan when she decides George is a nice guy after all. Tragic things happen nonetheless with the slow, languid rhythm of life in a small Oregon town. Along the way, Estes manages to capture many fine moments of poetic realism like the stillness of the forest around the river, the swirling eddies along the shore, a snail crawling along a leaf, and a drowning video camera. Cinematographer Sharone Meir uses colour filters and washed-out film stock to make everything glow with faded colours like old family photographs. The dialogue feels natural and the acting is precise; Estes obviously loves his cast and allows plenty of time and space for their characters to breathe, think, and be the confused kids they're meant to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsung hero, 20 Dec 2005
This (in my opinion) is one of the greatest film i have ever seen. So moving and absolutly brilliant. The acting is superb and is a big step up for Josh Peck from Drake and Josh. Go rent it or buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars All is not what it seems, 10 Jul 2006

The advert for Mean Creek is really dumbed down and disguises an intelligent indie flick about relationships and the complicated hierarchal structure of teenage bullying. Its a pretty tragic and harrowing story with some brilliant performances from a young cast and Jacob Aaron Estes' script is superb because whilst the kids in the film treat each other as two dimensional caricatures, we get to see them in more depth and as a result there's no specific hero or villain on show. I'm making Mean Creek sound like a real bore but its actually a great thriller/drama with ties to classic films like "Stand By Me" and "Deliverance" - which is about as good a recommendation as you can get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Story, Excellent Execution., 16 Feb 2007
By TomBeTom "TE-M" (Nottinghamshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
While "Mean Creek" is not a film that is plentiful in plotting and sub-plotting, it is one that is executed in a way that makes it a thoroughly enjoyable viewing experience. The young actors involved are all highly skilled -- even if some have been unfortunate enough to be stapled to low-brow Nickelodeon "comedies" (Josh Peck) -- with the six main cast members in this not entirely heartwarming indie drame delivering award-worthy performances. If I were to pick out the best three performances it would be those of Josh Peck (George), Ryan Kelley (Clyde) and Carly Schroeder (Millie).

The story centres around Sam (Rory Culkin) who, after being beaten up in the playground by bully George, along with his brother Rocky (Trevor Morgan) devises a plan to take revenge on the vicious bully. From there, Rocky's friends Clyde and Marty (Scott Mechlowicz) get in on the act, with Marty becoming pretty much the leader of the group in their revenge plot -- or at least he becomes the most keen to "punish" George for his actions. The revenge-seekers are however of a more sound and moral nature than those depicted in Larry Clark's "Bully", a docu-film of more darkness than this, but of a similar idea -- though that was based on a true story. The plan that they hatch is decidedly juvenile, to trick George into going to the lake with him, daring him to jump naked into the lake, and then making him run home in the nude still. They wish to "hurt him without really hurting" in the words of Rocky, this is if anything a way for them to make themselves feel as little guilt as possible about what they are about to do.

Josh Peck goes agaqinst type to play a darker, more deep character than he would usually do. As George, Peck produces a performance of extraordinary quality as he portrays a bully suffering from deep loneliness, confusion and a learning disability that has seen him held back in school, further disconnecting him from his peers. George tries to hide his low self-esteem with firey defensiveness, and it is this that leads him to the eventual conspiracy against him. Peck is three-dimensional and vivid and deserves much acclaim for what he has pulled off as this character.

Overall "Mean Creek" is a deep (if not deeply plotted) film in terms of morality and while being an utterly tragic, awry experience; This is a film that captures the interest of the viewer and depicts the consequences of one's actions with a harsh and down-to-earth reality. Directed brilliantly and acted brilliantly, this is a film for which a seeming lack of plot can easily be forgiven; It's beautiful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not The best film that I've seen.
The film is one of those film's that I thought was "just ok." The plot was very slow and plain, I think it could have been developed more or maybe a few twists added to it.
