Product Description

Product Description

We've reached a stage where we can no longer follow past practices unthinkingly, particularly when those practices are wasteful and harmful to the environment. It's time to get rid of the old-fashioned lawn and embrace a sane and healthy future: the meadow garden. A meadow is a shimmering mini-ecosystem, in which grasses combine with colourful perennials to form a rich tapestry that is friendly to all life--with minimal input of water, time and other scarce resources. Children and pets can play in complete safety, and birds and butterflies flock there. John Greenlee details all the practicalities of site preparation, plant selection, maintenance and plant performance. Gorgeous photography by Saxon Holt illustrates the message with stunning examples of meadow gardens.

About the Author

John Greenlee has been creating grass ecologies in gardens of all sizes since 1984 and is owner of Greenlee Nursery, the oldest grass nursery in California. He has appeared frequently on television and is author of The Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses (Rodale Press, 1992). Saxon Holt is a lifelong gardener whose photography focuses on the relationship between gardens and the land. His work has been featured in various publications. With the help of fellow photographer Joseph Greco, he maintains a library of more than 200,000 garden photographs.

US focused 21 July 2010
Format:Hardcover
This is a lovely book but potential UK purchasers should be aware it has a very US focus. This isn't a criticism and it's a very interesting read. But the concept of a meadow is very different in the US (unsurprising given the wider range of ecosystems that could be replicated) referring to a broader sense of wild, grassland planting. I purchased along with this book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Making-Wildflower-Meadow-Pam-Lewis/dp/0711221332/ref=pd_sim_b_1 with a view to practically developing a meadow. Pam Lewis's book is much more practically useful for this. Nice to have both but if you can only afford 1 and you're creating a meadow in the UK then this isn't the book for you.

Loved this book but beware it is also the same content as "The American Meadow Garden".
I borrowed it from the local library and discovered I did not want to return it so bought it. As I said unfortunatly "The Amercan Meadow Garden " was shown as a possible purachase in the same genre and I thought that perhaps it would have more information and ideas. I have a gardening friend who is getting that copy as a birthday gift.

The visuals are stunning and give you ideas as to how you can use local grass and plants in a natural and visually pleasing way. My aim , with the help of this book, is to get rid of that lawn and create a garden with a more natural look and helps with when I have not had the time or inclination to keep the garden "big house" neat.
