`Me and My Friend' is an album that probably passed most people by on its release. It seems that the curse of Nirvana persisted. Patrick Campbell -Lyons was working for Philips Prog' Rock Label Vertigo at the time as an A&R man. However, he was still a creative force in his own right as this album proves. He wrote a bunch of songs and hawked them around and got a deal with the newly launched Sovereign Label. However, history seemed to repeat itself, like Nirvana's third album `To Markos 111, this album seemed doomed also, as Sovereign disappeared and with it `Me and My Friend'.
Although the Album cover says Nirvana it is really a `Campbell -Lyons production'. It does feature ex Nirvana Cellist Sylvie Schuster but not his erstwhile partner Alex Spyropolous. This album is very different to the previous Nirvana output. The album starts with a funk Groove instrumental 'Out of Nowhere'. Then for me my favourite track on this album the sublime `Friends'. Overall the album is in introspective vain, with many deep lyrics on friendships (hence the title?), the track Mother England has lyrics by Dominic Behan set to music. `Everybody Should Fly a Kite is perhaps the most Nirvana like track.
Market Square records are to be congratulated on rescuing this album from the vaults and giving it a new lease of life. This CD release is also complimented by the inclusion of bonus tracks from Nirvana's 1972 album `Songs of Love and Praise'
So a great seventies album that is worth adding to your collection especially if you are a fan of the English group Nirvana (although Campbell Lyons is Irish and Alex Spyropolous is Greek!).
