James McCartney has always been one of my favourite "Beatle kids". The fact that he remained in the background for so much of his life, waited tables for a living whilst going through college and seemed determined to live as normal a life that the son of one of the most famous musicians on the planet possibly could are all to his credit. Occasional appearances on his Dad's albums (the guitar solo on "Heaven On A Sunday" from the critically acclaimed 1997 album "Flaming Pie" and a couple of co-writes and appearances on 2001's "Driving Rain") made it clear that he had inherited some of the McCartney music genes and, for years, it was speculated on whether James would actually release anything of his own. Just when the Beatle community had resigned themselves to the fact that it would probably never happen, the first E.P.s appeared in 2010 and 2011 with little fanfare or fuss. I both bought these as well as going to see James perform with his band at the 100 Club in Oxford Street, London. My initial impression was that he was a good musician with some interesting songs and a very reserved stage presence - a genuinely nice, modest guy. Oh, and that he didn't really sound like his Dad, either vocally or compositionally.

Now, a couple of years later, we have his first proper album, "Me" and, objectively, it's actually very good indeed, better than his earlier material.

As one of the 'son-of's of *them*, James McCartney provides an excellent, independent and self-assured sound on his first full album. To my ears, the music never strays into Beatles/Wing/Paul McCartney sound-alike nostalgia, but flows as an excellently produced modern sounding pop album. Catchy melodies, strong guitars and a beautiful singing voice that does not wander into dad-imitations either.

I listened to this as a result of Q Magazine's one star rating and critical lambasting. I didn't come to it hoping to dismiss it, I kind of like his Dad and honestly for weird affection reasons I was hoping this would be much better than Q suggested - obviously given the reviews here (happily) some do really like it.
But oh my god this is music to make your teeth ache - it just so turgid, so sticky, so grating, so banal - wow I haven't heard much this bad for ages. 'Thinking about rock 'n' roll it won't cure you, but it's good for your soul - oh yeah, thinking about you and I because it don't matter if we don't see eye to eye - oh no, it's so fine and it's going to be mine, life so fine and it's already mine'. Wow song after song of banal 'deep' meaningless lyrics, sung in a grating insipid style, your head begins to ache, your teetch begin to ache, seriously I'm not kidding this is every bit deserving of Qs one star. Their final lines are worth quoting 'It's painful. Couldn't someone have stepped in and saved him from all this?'. I don't always agree with them but sometimes they are so right, and believe me this time they are 100% right.
Have to go off to the Dentist or a neurologist now not sure which but I need help. Good luck to those who follow intrepdily behind and listen to this - you have more strength of purpose than me.

ME by James McCartney is a tremendous effort by a fabulous cat who bares a strong resemblance to someone from music's past.
Straight forward writing and no lack of talent. This artist is awesome.
