4.0 out of 5 stars Very varied and detailed! 30 Jun 2002
Format:Paperback
This book is one of the few of its kind. It starts with a preview of the Rumble in the jungle fight and concludes with the Tyson Vs Holyfield rematch. The unique aspect is that Mcllvanney features the key fights of the past 20 years that he previously wrote at the time. He includes the preview then the review of the fight.
This works very well indeed and the end result is a cross between a reference/hostorical book.
I`d suggest that solid boxing fans buy this as it is decently priced and a book that you`d want to read again and again because of the historical referances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review 20 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
McIlvanney is not just one of the best sports writers around, he's one of the best writers around. And this is as good as it gets for lovers of boxing. His deep and extensive knowledge, and his humanity, are all on display in this essential exposition of the heroic and tragic faces of the sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of brilliant! 23 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
McIlvanney on Boxing is, without doubt, one of the best boxing books I have ever read. The author, who is an absolute master of metaphor, takes you into the hearts and minds of his subjects with a wonderful clarity that is educational, moving and exhilarating, all at the same time. I have just finished reading this excellent work, and I know I will be revisiting those pages for many years to come. Any boxing fan who has not read this tome should buy a copy and read it immediately.
