4.0 out of 5 stars Very varied and detailed! 30 Jun 2002
This book is one of the few of its kind. It starts with a preview of the Rumble in the jungle fight and concludes with the Tyson Vs Holyfield rematch. The unique aspect is that Mcllvanney features the key fights of the past 20 years that he previously wrote at the time. He includes the preview then the review of the fight.
This works very well indeed and the end result is a cross between a reference/hostorical book.
I`d suggest that solid boxing fans buy this as it is decently priced and a book that you`d want to read again and again because of the historical referances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boxing Writing at its Best! 21 May 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I read McIlvanney in the Sunday Times on a regular basis. His work is out of the very top drawer, on football and many other sporting issues, but boxing is his first love and this volume showcases his talents vividly. Using his vast repertoire of work this look at boxing from the late 50s through to the 1990s illustrates his ability to paint canvases of the sport as no one else can. His command of the language and the skill to deliver wonderful build ups and reports on some of the Fights of the Century (Ali v. Frazier 1971, "The Rumble in the Jungle", Leonard v. Hearns 1981, Watt, Winstone, McGowan and Buchanan of the Brits) are engrossing reads. His commentaries and evaluations of fights and fighters are unsurpassed. Excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review 20 Jan 2012
McIlvanney is not just one of the best sports writers around, he's one of the best writers around. And this is as good as it gets for lovers of boxing. His deep and extensive knowledge, and his humanity, are all on display in this essential exposition of the heroic and tragic faces of the sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of brilliant! 23 Oct 2011
McIlvanney on Boxing is, without doubt, one of the best boxing books I have ever read. The author, who is an absolute master of metaphor, takes you into the hearts and minds of his subjects with a wonderful clarity that is educational, moving and exhilarating, all at the same time. I have just finished reading this excellent work, and I know I will be revisiting those pages for many years to come. Any boxing fan who has not read this tome should buy a copy and read it immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars McIlvanney on Boxing. 11 May 2001
By Anthony Curtin - Published on Amazon.com
This magnificent book is a must for all boxing fans. The writer focuses on (recent)fights and events in the boxing world. Each occassion is brought to life with exquisitely descriptive prose so excellently constructed, that the reader will find it hard to put down. Some parts are genuinely sad, while at the same time Mr.McIlvanney's gift for humourous observations and anecdotes is hilarious.Intoxicating!
5.0 out of 5 stars Hugh McIlvanney Is the Undisputed Champion of Boxing Writing 31 Jan 2001
By Mikko Marttinen - Published on Amazon.com
Hugh McIlvanney is often described as the best english-speaking boxing writer of our time. After reading this book I must agree. The book consists of McIlvanney's insightful coverage of the major boxers and fights in the last four decades. His expert boxing analysis and masterful handling of english language is of the same level as Muhammad Ali's footwork or Larry Holmes' jab.

It's a very good book on boxing. Covers a range of boxers and matches-some from overseas- and some really memorable bouts.
