Review

'A brilliant idea--short, perceptive books which tell you what you need to know about some of the most vibrant and challenging writing around today' --Time Out (London) on January 30, 2001<br /><br />'A bit like having a reading group in your pocket. Ian Rankin The series comes as near to squaring various circles - popular / academic, 'good read' / 'classic Lit', novel / film of the book as any I know. And at best it goes a fair way towards reshuffling those categories and redrawing the boundaries. With the first volume, I was relieved. After two or three, I was hooked. The books are invaluable for gathering out-of-the-way or ephemeral comment from TV and radio interviews and the web as well as from literary reviews. Refreshingly upfront and up-to-date... Highly finished and pleasantly handleable as books in their own right...' --The Times Higher Education Supplement, May 31, 2002

Product Description

A critical examination of Ian McEwan and his novel, "Enduring Love", this title forms part of a series that aims to provide accessible and informative introductions to some of the most popular, acclaimed and influential novels of recent years. A team of contemporary fiction scholars from both sides of the Atlantic has been assembled to give a thorough and readable analysis of each of the novels in question. The books in the series all follow the same five-part structure: a short biography of the novelist; a full-length study of the novel, drawing out the most important themes and ideas; a summary of how the novel was received when it was first published; a summary of the novel's standing today, including any film or television adaptations and a helpful list of discussion questions, suggestions for further reading, and useful websites.

2.0 out of 5 stars Be Aware - this is not the book, 16 Aug 2009
Just note that this is a guide and not the actual novel. Difficult to tell this from the product title.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book!, 14 Nov 2003
After having to read this bok for my A-Levels in English Literiture, The first 5 chapters are very tedious, but once you actually get into the book, McEwan's finest book is absolutely fantastic!

Meet Joe, Mr. Rational, the guy that has to break things down into atomic theory before he can understand anything, and see how Mr. Religeon Jed Perry turns Joe's world upside down, and how homophobic Joe thinks Jed, sufferer of the fictionous De Clarembault's syndrome, is only after sex when he finds Jed waiting outside his posh apartment in London.
Clarissa, Joe's common-law wife, doesn't believe Joe at all and neither do the police, claiming Joe might be imagining everything about 'Jed' but will you read on untill you reach the novels climax?

The novel, Enduring Love, starts off with the tragic death of an unknown man, John Logan, in a terrible balloon accident, but that is the last thing on Joe's mind when he gets uncountable amounts of letters a week and he is gently led astray from the one woman he could ever love.

The film will be released in 2004 and i highly recommend you people buy and read the book first, i loved it and many people did too, especially with McEwan's outragous humour thrown in everywhere to make sure you are still awake amongst the science drool.

Overall I really think everyone should read this, it will be a smash hit in 2004 and the book absolutely rules, and this is coming from a 16 year old male!!
