Manufacturer's Description

The M46-500CDR is a self propelled, rear rollered, steel deck petrol lawn mower from McCulloch.

The 46cm metal blade is housed in a robust deep dome steel deck for good collection and mulching performance. The grass is collected in a large 55 litre plastic grassbox for less time spent emptying the grass cuttings into your compost heap, and more time at the job in hand.

The rear roller on your M46-500CDR will provide that classic look, giving your lawn excellent quality stripes. Achieving your preferred grass height is easy, thanks to 6 heights of cut (between 20 - 70mm).

Keeping you M46-500CDR clean after mowing is easy, thanks to a handy deck wash port. Simply connect your hose to the port and turn on the tap. The self propelled system takes all the effort out of pushing your mower, and will leave you feeling less fatigued.

Your M46-500CDR is powered by a Briggs & Stratton 158cc 500 series engine, known worldwide for reliability and performance. With this partnership you have a quality lawnmower with the very best in engine technology that will deliver cut after cut, year after year.

Product Description

I needed a mower to replace an aging, heavy, rotary, wheeled, 53cm-cut, beast that was rusting away. But, I don't like spending money so much researching was done. Couldn't afford a Honda (it would probably last longer than I will).

Found this at about £100 less than the local retailer (how will they survive?) and it's all (almost) I need. While it's a much narrower cut, it's no problem - and the grass box, in comparison, is huge. Assembly was a bit of a fiddle as the grass deflector had become detached and the rather poor manual doesn't show how to re-fit it.

Height adjustment works well and the roller produces an impressive striped effect.

Why only 4 stars? Two niggly reasons - one is that it's a one-speed machine and my old one enabled me to change the revs, so I'm feeling deprived; secondly, the manual is pretty basic. For example, the mower has a hose attachment for cleaning (hope this will minimise risk of hidden rust) but no guidance on how to use. In case you don't know McCulloch is owned by Husqvarna group and they filled in the gaps.

All-in-all a mower to recommend - at a good price and delivered promptly.

McCulloch Mower 24 Sep 2010
Bought this mower as a distress purchase having had a Flymo rotary for years. Lighter and shorter than my old mower which is good, build quality is very high and easy to assemble although the instructions aren't the simplest. Easy starting and cuts well. Negatives for me are; clutch snatches on setting off and the cutting height options could be better, I would like a lower one than it can go. When I lift to turn after a pass the roller digs into the lawn leaving a gouge mark. If you release the safety bar the engine stops which I find a pain, maybe its a H&S thing.I've used it 4 times now,so early days but all seems o.k. on balance. A good value petrol self drive mower with well known engine and as I've said, good build quality. I have 200 sq metres of lawn so the 18" cut makes the job shorter and it produces good stripes, exactly what I wanted.

Beast of a Mower 16 Sep 2010
By David
After having owned two Atco Admirals, both of which ultimately failed because the plastic used was not strong enough, I wanted an all metal mower. The McCulloch certainly is that, a very solid citizen indeed, the downside being it is on the heavy side to manoeuvre particularly when you are pushing it without power assistance. With power assistance it is very impressive although you need to exercise considerable strength when turning as it can easily run away with you. It cuts beautifully and I have been very impressed with it.

Bad design
Mower cuts well but has basic flaws 1. to heavy for manovering, 2. chain sheild and height adjuster are beyond the cutting width of the machine so catch on trees , walls etc. 3. Read more
