4.0 out of 5 stars Whats the problem?, 7 Mar 2004

This review is from: McAfee VirusScan Home Edition 8.0 (CD-ROM)
Having bought this software to replace my unreliable AVG when I bought a new computer, I was expecting a reasonable package. I had read a couple of reviews etc, decision had been made and I was surprised to see it getting such a slating on the amazon site. Feeling brave I decided to buy it anyway in combination with McAfee firewall.
All installed no problem, scanned and everything was clear. I have had no problem with constant dial up requests as other users have and wonder if they are using the same software. Updates are unobtrusive whenever I connect to the internet, usually happening while I check my email, and once downloaded i am told this has been done and allowed to continue.
Few days ago I 'got' my first ever virus, and didn't know about it until somebody phoned me to warned me. When I checked it had been erased automatically by McAfee and i hadn't been bothered by it at all. One of my colleges had infected emails sent to all in his address book, upsetting a lot of people. As the virus was only a week old he hadn't updated his virus software in time.
I don't want bells and whistles, just unobtrusive software that does its job. The more automatic the more likely it gets updated and is reliable when you need it.
I would recommend this package to anyone, and am in the process of doing so to all those my college has infected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Banana, 3 Mar 2004

Having read all the reviews I could get my hands on for both McAfee and Norton, I came to the conclusion that I would need a crowbar to ease either program onto my pc. However, I needed anti virus software, so I plumped for McAfee. Why all the fuss? It installed beautifully and, even though I'm also running Zone Alarm, which some people seem to think causes a problem, I haven't experienced a single issue with it. It updates periodically without my knowledge and just prompts me when it's time to install the new files. Simple.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 19 Nov 2003
This review is from: McAfee VirusScan Home Edition 8.0 (CD-ROM)
After getting lots and lots of "illegal operation" messages and noticing that my harddrive was getting suspiciously low on space, I decided that it was about time to invest in some decent antivirus software. I'd never used McAfee before, but after getting some advice from friends I decided to give it a go... and I'm glad I did.
Installation is easy - just put the CD in for you and it will do the rest. I run a P3 733mhz processor and have noticed no drop in speed despite having the virus checker constantly active. Another nice feature is that there is no need to manually scan files - they are scanned automatically when you open the folder they are in. Updates are also free and downloaded without you having to do anything - which is good for lazy people like me!
The only minor bad point is that you get a lot of "suspicious script" warnings - even from running microsoft products. However, this is just a minor annoyance compared to the hassle of having to get rid of viruses!

For the price it's definitely value for money - easily as good as Norton and cheaper too!
