Phishing websites can steal your personal information, and malicious websites can download malware that you might unknowingly spread to your friends. With the daily emergence of new and more sophisticated Internet threats that could disrupt your digital life, you need more than the Mac OS to protect yourself, your computer, your identity, and your family

McAfee Internet Security for Mac automatically helps protect your Mac from malware and cyberattacks, and safeguards your personal information from data-stealing programs and would-be hackers. It gives you the freedom to explore, download, and shop on the Internet any time, any place without fear of criminals or cyberattacks. McAfee is the world's largest provider of Internet security and is relentlessly committed to protecting and empowering you on the web

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I had been using another brand of internet security for some while and on the whole was quite satisfied with its performance, but when it came time to renew the annual subscription I thought that I would give McAfee Internet Security a try.

Those of you that like to obtain a physical product for your money will be disappointed. In this respect I feel that McAfee Internet Security is very deceptive - the box looks like a full retail version and even comes shrink wrapped. However, open it up and you will find that all it contains are two pieces of card - one with a Quick Installation Guide and another with McAfee's website address and a serial number. This is purely an electronic download and as such it would be more appropriately sold through the App Store instead of wasting precious materials and postage to send out an empty box!

Anyhow, I downloaded and registered the software on the McAfee website with no problems at all. The download took a few minutes and the installation not much longer. I left the configuration at its default settings and this seemed to work fine, that is until I tried to use certain applications or my AirPrint printer (a Brother MFC-J6510DW).

At first I did not associate the fact that I could no longer print, via my wireless network, with the McAfee software that I had installed. I spent days trying to figure out the problem and eventually decided that it must be the update to 0S X 10.9 that I had recently installed. I took my printer off of the wireless network and re-connected it via a USB cable - everything worked fine again but after several days of being unable to print directly from my iPad etc. I got a little fed up with this and decided to look at the problem again.

Ran this for several days before uninstalling it. Nothing found in any scan. Slowed all apps to a crawl and the apps took an age to open. Waste of time. Without it everything is running OK.

I am not sure whether you can review a product such as this too quickly and therefore I would like to review it over the next few weeks.

28th February 2014

Firstly, I would say that I have been extremely happy with the free Sophos product, downloadable from the web, which I use both when the computer is running and also run a scan about once a week. I have never found anything on my system, but best to be safe, particularly with some of the malware which seems to get secreted into the systems of PCs and I am sure some Macs. So why did I obtain MacAfee Internet Security 2014? To be honest, I received it as part of the Amazon Vine programme and as it offered a couple of extra benefits, over and above the Sophos derivative, I decided to install it.

First off, there is nothing in the product box other than instructions to install the software via the web and a registration card with a serial number. The card refers you to a website and after registering, downloading is relatively quick on a medium speed broadband; about 2 minutes. Installation thereafter is quite simple following the on screen instructions if needed. First off, it asked me to remove Sophos, rather than simply disable it, which I have, but would have preferred to leave it there in its disabled state, but if I need it I hope that I can still download it again for free. The McAfee program takes up around 250Mb of disk space, so this utility is not small, but what is in terms of software nowadays. The installation completes and then you get a system update. You then get an option to configure it, but I left it in the default setting initially and decided to scan the whole system.

INSTALLATION
============
Installed with ease. No problems.

SCAN
====
Ran the virus checker, and it found nothing.

PROTECTION
==========
I have to admit that with a PC virus protection is essential. There are fewer viruses associated with macs. (But to be fair there are fewer macs)
I'm of the view that as macs continue to get more popular then this is going to be more important and essential.

GOOD VALUE
==========
Hmmmn, the suite on a PC seems more extensive. That said, overall this is good value.

Firstly, no disc! For the price, you would feel that costs could be removed from empty packaging/shipping and just supply the code to download the product directly.

On my Mac, I do notice a lag when using - Virus issues are not unheard of but realistically, after 10+ years of never having an issue, I found having this installed was more of a headache and thus, removed after a short while.

I'm not a great fan of McAfee on PC either but if the environemnt required it on a Mac then I would consider this but as it is, served no use to me.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I had been feeling uneasy about lack of protection on my Mac. I knew that in the past McAfee on my Mac had been less clunky than Norton, so decided to take the opportunity to try this latest version

Pros
+ Set up is straightforward - rather than a disc there is a card with the serial number to allow download of the software
+ Covers virus protection, hard drive scan and verifies internet sites

Cons
- There has been an impact on performance but at the moment it's not bad enough for me to want to deinstall
- none identified to date
