5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Internet Protection!, 5 Nov 2005

KMW (England) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 (PC) (CD-ROM)
Having used McAfee Internet Security Suite 6 & 2006, Norton Internet Security and Panda Platinum, I can honestly say McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 is the best one i have used. It is very easy to setup and the program runs with no problems, although if you are using a network, you may have to apply the WinsocksXP fix if you are having trouble connecting to the internet. McAfee detected numerous viruses that norton (my least favourable internet security suite) failed to detect.

McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 offers good value for money and if you are looking for superior internet protection, I highly recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars An aggressive piece of software, 25 May 2006
By
This review is from: McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 (PC) (CD-ROM)

Aggressive towards me and my PC that is.

It came pre-installed on my Dell desktop box, purchased in January 2006. I never chose it as a `friend'.

OK, so it can search for viruses. Great. Well done. So can some Freeware these days.

However, McAfee exhibits a number of other, undesirable features:

- The endless pop-up reminders to renew or update the McAfee software. One starts to feel almost bullied after a while. Some of these reminders cannot be switched off.
- The way it clashes and crashes with all sorts of other programs on my PC (e.g. MS Outlook, ActiveSync)
- The stream of harassing junk mail it sends me reminding me how lucky I am that I can get a discount if I renew my version etc. Oh, how I wish I hadn't registered.

Well I'm the sort of (fairly technical) user who's extremely careful anyway and I rarely get caught out (fingers crossed). Indeed, when I have been infected in the past I've managed to sort it out with some help from some rabidly geekish websites and some useful bits of Freeware (e.g. Spybot Search & Destroy).

So, bye bye McAfee `Security Centre'. The only security you are really interested in is the security of your own future cash flows. I'll be doing one last virus scan and then you are being un-installed, never to darken the door of my PC again.

Like banging your head against a wall, it's lovely when it stops.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid with XP and multiple log on accounts, 20 May 2006
By
This review is from: McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006 (PC) (CD-ROM)
I recently purchased a new PC with XP home and tried to install McAfee Internet Security Suite 2006. I was then faced with a host of problems. Following installation, XP no longer gave me prompts to choose the appropriate account to log in to - it just took straight through to my desk top. It then repeatedly prevented me from getting onto the internet and I had to re-boot several times before it would allow me to do so. Typically my computer would seize up and I had to simply switch it off at then power point. I then had significant difficulty in uninstalling the software - I could remove the individual components (Anti-Virus, Spam Killer etc) but could not remove the Security Centre. I managed to get advice from McAfee's website, but even manually deleting recommended files from the McAfee folder on my C drive failed to make a difference. It was only when I deleted McAfee's Quick Clean software (an unrelated product) did it allow me to remove the Internet Suite completely! If you have XP and use multiple log-in accounts avoid this product like the plague. As it happens the free AVG anti virus programme was shown to be more effective than McAfee in a well known PC magazine - I now have this and its great. I also have downloaded Micrsoft's Defender (anti-spyware) which is excellent and provides added protection. Its very compatable with XP and non-intrusive.
