Reviews

Tom Hanks stars in this fantasy drama that tells the story of four college friends and the imaginary world that slowly consumes them all. When Robbie Wheeling (Hanks) starts the new academic year at college, he quickly makes friends with Kate, Daniel and Jay Jay, three fellow students with one common interest Monsters & Mazes. A game of magic, myth and mystical powers, the four players decide to take the roleplay into the real world but quickly find themselves drawn deeper into the gameplay until players and characters are barley distinguishable from each other.

This made for TV movie is based on the book of the same name. I guess it was made to cash in on the Dungeons and Dragons role playing games that were popular at the time. In this TVM the game that entraps the characters is called Mazes and Monsters. The film plays on Americas paraonia at that time that A grade students were losing their minds and abandoning their studies to go off on mythical quests and never return. Cos apparently if you play a game where you pretend to be someone else pretty soon you are that person. Like, if you pull a face and the wind changes you're stuck with it. It's true. Anyway, that's what happens to young Tommy Hanks. Ok his parents are having marital difficulties and there is his brothers recent suicide. But Tommy is a comitted Level 9 Mazes and Monsters player but to get to level 10 he has to give up drink , drugs and sex. And he's at college. Ouch that's one serious player. He goes right out the College front door, leaves his girl and his friends and goes on a mythical quest to find his dead brother.

Still the creature FX are marvellous given the budget and young Tommy Hanks is great as a nutter who trips into the game and has difficulty getting out of it.

Yep, first there was "Reefer Madness" (1936) telling of the pitfalls of smoking reefers. Now there is mazes and monsters madness. An undetectable force that you are powerless to resist.
Tom Hanks as usual fits comfortably in any role he plays. The theme may be a little dated, but it is still fun to watch and speculate "There but for fortune go I".

As you have guest the story is about a role-playing game that gets out of hand. Tom Hanks plays a person that might not be quite stable and the addition of this game feeds his fantasies. This leads to a mysterious disappearance. This is more of a physiological movie than a blood and guts type. Before people say what is real or not, different people will come to this movie from different backgrounds, and go away a little closer.

terrible dvd copy , can understand that's its an old cheap film, but the film isn't even in the middle of the screen, even when played on the pc theres a black strip down the left side and even a wider one on the right side with a fuzzy white line along the bottom. looks like its just been recorded of the tv onto a broken old tape and then put onto a cd.

My wife went on about this film she had seen in the 1980's and always told me that she would like to see it again. Knowing that the great Tom Hanks was in it made me curious and so I was thrilled when I saw that it was finally being released. To cut a long story short I bought it for her as a secret present and when a few of us gathered around to watch it it was UNBEARABLE due to its absolute appallimg picture and sound. This can be regarded as a 3rd Generation pan and scan full screen poor sound copy. Absoloutely rubbish. It left me embarrassed!!! Beware that you too do not have the same experience. The company who have released such a poor standard dvd should be ashamed! They have taken a vhs videoed copy off the TV and have put it out in a good front cover package. The reverse side shows the poor quality in the caption stills of the movie. I was going to send it back and get my money back but as I had bought it as a gift for someone I couldn't. Do not get mugged, stay away, you have been warned!!!
