Best Of The Mayr Oratorios Thus Far Recorded 6 July 2009
By James S. Eisenberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I love Mayr, sometimes uncritically, but this work is such a collection of delights, so full of musical wonders, that I would not hesitate to recommend it to any one who loves the music of the late 18th century. Each number is more harmonically interesting than the last. Characteristically, even when Mayr is at his most virtuosic, the meaning of the words is never slighted. Mozart, Haydn, Cimarosa and Paisiello are audible influences, but Mayr was very much his own man. This is a very entertaining go at one of the Bible's strangest and most psychologically compelling stories.
The fine group of soloists has mastered a good 99% of their roles. There is an occasional point where you sense that some coloratura has been fudged, but they are really quite wonderful. Stefanie Iranyi in the travesty role of Tobias reminds me a bit of Cecilia Bartoli in both strengths and weaknesses. She is accurate and expressive, but the voice is somewhat aspirated.
The sound recording is excellent, with some fine detailing in the orchestral playing.
The back cover claims that texts and translations in both English and German are to be had on line, but I could only locate the German translation.
TOO MARVELLOUS TO MISS.. WHAT A REVELATION... 11 April 2012
By WH CHARLTON-PERKINS - Published on Amazon.com

I could not agree more whole-heartedly with the other reviewers on this site about Mayr's oratorio, Tobiae matrimonium (The Marriage of Tobias) composed in 1794. This double Naxos cd set allows one, with scarcely a hint of exaggeration, to invoke late Mozart, as one glorious coloratura number follows after another, each with luminous orchestration, imbued with a wealth translucent wind textures, a gorgeous harp obligato, et al. The singers all sound like young and uber talented prize winners indicated by the biographical blurb in the leaflet, and their performances are captured in great sound and superbly conducted. Difficult to select stand-out moments of fabulous music here, but one is certainly track 9 on disc 1, the dazzling quartet, 'Dulci motu palpitando', closely followed by soprano Cornelia Horak's terrific rendering of Sara's gorgeous aria, 'Agitata, incerta, oppresa'(track 13, disc 1). The title role is a bravura mezzo part and Stefanie Iranyi does it proud: her final aria, 'Terge, o chara, tuas puppilas', with its marvellous horn and oboe obligato parts, almost rivals Constanza's 'Marten aller Arten' from Mozart's 'Entfuhrung aus dem Serail' in its virtuoso demands. Thrilling stuff, from first to last. I just can't get enough of it. Rush forth and buy, then spread the word.. Mayr richly deserves to be more widely embraced by posterity than he has been. Especially when served as he is here.Just one quibble, about the lack of a libretto, but as mentioned in a previous review, recourse to the Naxos website takes care of this.
