If you have ever played the superb parent game Settlers of Catan, then you will understand the gist of this two player version. However, the problem with this game is in its very design, reducing the larger version down to a card game means that there is no need for players to interact with one another and they can even avoid trading with each other altogether. With the exception of a few action cards that are used for sabotage, players virtually play solitaire in a race to the 12 victory points. Admittedly, this is a little bit harsh, because any player familiar with the original will automatically begin to trade with their opponent, this in itself helping to move the game along, but the rules don't really encourage player interaction beyond the sabotage attempts.

On the plus side, this card version is perfect for taking away on holiday. We are in New Zealand on a year's working holiday and had to limit our luggage, so we sadly left our favourite games behind. We soon discovered this version however, but have to admit to being slightly disappointed.

As with its parent, the game takes a while to set up and usually lasts for between an hour and two hours. After a few practice runs using the rule book we got the hang of it and quickly became addicted. The game requires a fairly wide playing surface. You need several feet of lateral space as you add settlements, you gain more resource cards, and those really spread out on the table or floor fast. If you are looking for a compact card game, this isn't it.

The main problem here is that this card game tries to look like the original Settlers but doesn't feel the same. For one thing, you can't block someone's road with strategic planning; you can't really negotiate well when trading because you only have one opponent; resource production is very slow, and because of the way you track resources it is easy to lose some by overlooking them.

This game is best suited to fans of the original that can never get a third player, or like us are going away and have limited space. If you have never played any of the the Settlers of Catan series, don't start with this one; it's only a so-so game and there are so many more card games out there that are much better than this.
