I've only got to play this game three times so far so I'm no expert on strategy, but I knew from the first play that this is the game that Monopoly wished it could be. I always dreaded having to play Monopoly but I will always look forward to playing Lords of Vegas.
You are trying to build the biggest casinos and maintain control of them by having the largest number die at each of your casinos. You are paid for lots you own as well as casinos on each player's turn, not just your own turn. If you are the boss of the casino drawn that turn you also get points which is the only way to win. As you advance on the victory track, there are breaks causing you to have to have more points to 'jump' the break. So two 1 point (1 tile) casinos will not allow you to jump a two point break. You have to have a two point (2 tile) casino to do that and so on. The fact that there is a definite end to this game (an actual 'end of game' card in the deck!) is a plus! No dragging on and on...and it takes about an hour to play.
The dice are colorful and you often get to roll lots of them (huge luck factor with the dice, but, hey! This is Vegas baby! The casino tiles are thick, chunky and glamorous. The card stock is acceptable and the only shuffling takes place before the game so no problems there. The only disappointment is the paper money. Seems to me like poker chips would have been more thematic. Actually, I did try replacing the paper money with poker chips and it works BUT it's still unwieldy because there is lots of money flying back and forth. Everyone gets paid on everyone's turn as a matter of fact. We took this game with us on a cruise and found it easier to just keep tabs on our money on paper. We ended up each doing our own scoring because otherwise the 'banker' hardly has time for anything else.
As you get more familiar with the game you will want to take advantage of the fact that you can trade, sell or buy almost anything with other players. We have only played this as a 2 and 3 player game but I can see that even more players would make this part even more fun.
If you are new to gaming beyond the usual fare (Scrabble, Monopoly, Trouble, etc) please do yourself a favor and go to boardgamegeek dot com. It's a great community of games and will open up a whole new world for you. We have found so many new (to us) and wonderful games and there's nothing better for drawing family and friends together for a good time.

Lords of Vegas is a board game that does a great job of recreating the excitement of gambling with dice in a competitive environment (Vegas... wink wink).

2-4 players are investors who are slowing buying up land in the barren Las Vegas desert, and are building casinos along the budding Las Vegas Strip. As the game moves along, players acquire deeds for the land and have the option to build casinos on this land.

As the Las Vegas strip is developing, players' casinos begin running into each. This is where the action kicks into high gear. Casino owners vie for control to be the BOSS of merged casinos. Dice are rolled against other casino owners, with the highest dice roller being the new Boss. Players have several options at their disposal to take back over casinos, and take over the previous Boss.

So why is it important to be the Boss? Because only the Boss scores points, the path to victory. And the bigger the casino, the more points. This leads to lots of action where multiple players are rolling handfuls of dice, with HUGE payoffs in points at risk. As the game progresses, more money and dice fly as people jockey to be the Boss of the biggest casinos.

-Dice rolling can lead to massive swings in momentum. You FEEL the change. This results in cheers and head shaking at times, and gives the up and down feeling you get while gambling.
-Rules lead to lots of player interaction
-It feels great to roll heads up with someone, knowing you can be their Boss!
-Enough risk/reward strategy to keep hardcore gamers interested.
-Playtime is about an hour with experienced players.
-Gameboard is beautiful, and all components are colorful and well made. Paper money has pictures of Elvis and Sinatra!

-For players who do not like luck in strategy games, an underdog can come from behind and win with the right streak of dice rolling and card draws.
-Money payouts nearly every turn can lead to a busy banker.
-Above average mathy decisions, so it probably doesn't mix well with a drinking gamer group who just want to roll dice.

Overall, I highly recommend this game. Our lunchtime gaming group has been playing this exclusively for almost 3 weeks, and more and more people are joining in now due to the excitement!

The gameplay is great in this game. The theme is rich throughout, and the rules tend not to get in the way of the gameplay. Unlike other Eurogames which tend to eliminate randomness to even the playing field, Lords of Vegas embraces random chance. You have to literally gamble and play the odds in order to win at this game.
Gameplay is quite fun, rules are simple to teach, and it only takes about an hour. The one and only drawback I can think of is that this game only supports 4 players.

This game is a good high end game that takes a bit of skill mixed with a touch of luck. I know some game purists do not like the element of chance to influence the game play but the chance element in this game is not over powering and breaks up possible over powering player skill domination or not if the dice rolls against you. Even if the dice rolls against you a player can rally position and take back loses. I do wish the game added more players with out an upgrade. More than 4 players could play with very little changes in game play, you just need more of the special dice because they are also used as game token and you need to remove the stop play card from the deck when playing with more players (I would add only 2 players).
So to all I say, have fun and play well.

Lords of Vegas: 2-4 Players, Ages 12+, Average Play Time = 60 to 90 Minutes

I'm fairly pleased with the quality of the components however I scratched my head at the box insert / tray. No matter how many different ways I tried laying out the components, it just didn't "seem" right. Either the tray was designed by someone who'd been sniffing paint for five hours straight or I've been playing so many board games lately that I've become both senile and delirious.

The manual was a bit confusing at times. There were five casino tiles that looked similar to their "brethren" but were plain in color and had a graphic on them. I have no idea what they are used for and I couldn't find anything in the manual. My best guess was that they were category tokens of some kind...but who knows for what. I was also a bit confused by what players can actually do with a vacant casino, which results when a player must use an existing die to build a new casino. Do players have the option to re-buy it? Can an opponent buy it out at normal price or must they sprawl into it at double the cost? I couldn't find a mention of this in the manual either, so I just invented by own rules. If anyone knows the answers to these questions, please leave a comment below.

While we're on the subject of miscellaneous rules, the two player variant doesn't use the "F" block lots. If one is drawn, $ and VPs are scored as normal but the same player draws again and takes a regular turn. Think of the "F" block cards as a bonus payout.

Overall, the game was a lot of fun to play. Vinnie Jr, my eleven year old son, claimed that his favorite part was figuring out which properties to buy and what colors to use to get the most money and points. He complained at the start because his income was low, but as the game progressed he saw how good planning could rake in a steady income, assuming that the property cards were being nice to him. There's a little luck involved with what colors are drawn but the laws of probability are the same throughout the galaxy. He ended up winning the game, having monopolized a few 5-6 VP casinos. I attempted to reorganize regularly to change-up who was boss but the dice were particularly cruel to me this time around. By the time I got the dice to agree with me, the game over card was drawn.

It's worth noting that we didn't trade or gamble once...we were so engrossed with strategizing over the colors that we neglected that aspect of the game. The game took us about a total of ninety minutes, including setup and some pauses for the occasional rule clarification. It's hard to compare this game to anything I have in my collection...though I suppose it could be the bastard spawn of Monopoly and Acquire...sort of.
