Owl City's style will not appeal to everyone; it's very cutesy and sweet, full of gentle humour and whimsy, backed by a cheery electronic sound. Adam Young's voice sounds chirpy and twangy, full of wide-eyed innocence and childlike charm. I'm not a huge fan, but I can see the appeal if you are in a certain type of light-hearted mood.
'Maybe I'm Dreaming' is Owl City's first full album (there was an EP -
Of June) and I found it had a simpler sound than later albums. The songs were more straight-forward, without the gimicky sound effects - in fact a couple of the songs were re-worked on his next album
Ocean Eyes. All the songs are pleasant and catchy and full of his usual imaginative imagery but there was none that really stood out for me. I found it a little bland and prefer his newer material.
If you like Owl City then you won't be disappointed - these songs are just as sweet and cute as the more recent ones and you might even enjoy the cleaner, purer sound, but if you are not familiar with the artist I would recommend instead his latest album,
All Things Bright And Beautiful.
