Synopsis
Novelist-playwright-comedian-screenwriter-television writer Ben Elton (THE YOUNG ONES, BLACKADDER) tries his busy hand at directing with MAYBE BABY, a short, sweet romantic comedy about a couple very much in love but having difficulty conceiving a child. Hugh Laurie (Sam) and Joely Richardson (Lucy) are perfect as the struggling couple. Sam works for the BBC, where his new young boss shoves mottoes and buzzwords down his employees' throats. (One of the best is "Stay on message.") Sam and Lucy try anything and everything to conceive, reading books, following quack advice, using special massage oils, and seeing doctor after doctor to determine what the problem is. An aspiring writer, Sam has been looking for just the right story. When he suggests to Lucy (who keeps track of all of her thoughts and emotions in her diary) that he write about their struggles trying to have a baby, Lucy is furious that he would even consider making light of their personal relationship. But when he goes ahead and does it anyway--without her knowledge--their love is tested in more ways than one. Elton's witty debut film also features small parts played by such British stars as Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson, Dawn French, and Joanna Lumley.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well I liked it..., 31 Mar 2006
By Greg Farefield-Rose (Hertfordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Maybe Baby is a comedy adapted by Ben Elton from his novel Inconceivable which was inspired by Ben and his wife's real life problems in conceiving a baby. It stars Hugh Laurie as Sam, a frustrated BBC writer and Joely Richardson as Lucy, his wife who is desperate to have a baby.

Lucy decides that she and Sam should keep confidential, separate diaries on their thoughts a they undergo fertility treatment. This gives Sam an idea for a production and he takes a peak with disastrous results (though it all turns out OK in the end in true romantic comedy style!).

Maybe Baby is clearly an attempt by Elton and his cohorts to create a romcom to rival Richard Curtis / Hugh Grant vehicles such as Notting Hill and Love Actually. Although it arguably doesn't quite have the stamp of class of those films, it is an excellent feature which definitely didn't deserve the panning it received. Like most Elton productions, the supporting cast includes a number of characters who are there just for laughs to counteract the more serious lead plot. Particularly fine in this respect is Tom Hollander as Ewan Proclaimer, a gritty, modern Scottish director who is obsessed by drugs. Another very close-to-the-mark character (no prizes for guessing who) by Ben in an excellent well-made comedy which is well worth seeing.

5.0 out of 5 stars a wonderfull comady very real life with a funny side, 16 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This film is about a couple going through the reality of infertility and ivf. I really liked this film as its shows somthing very close to home, it helped me see the funny side of what im going through and it also showed the emotional side of ivf. I feel this helped me think about how it is all making me feel going through it at the moment. A very funny and sad film all in one well worth watching.

2.0 out of 5 stars waste of talent, 3 Jun 2006
What a waste of (some) good actors! We *know* Hugh Laurie can act, as can Tom Hollander, as can Adrian Lester, etc, etc. What on earth happened? I think the fault has to lie solely with Ben Elton, who may have had altogether too much to do with this, having written the book, the screenplay and directed the thing.

The script was clunky, and delivered - with almost no exceptions - badly. Most of the roles were poorly cast, with an eye to creating an alternative-to-Curtis BritComedy peppered with Names rather than a watchable bittersweet comedy. I agree with the reviewers who said that they felt the film didn't know where it was going - it was badly paced, yes - but it also veered between being a pretty crap example of cliched British slapstick, and angst-driven drama. The mix doesn't work!

The plot's not actually a bad idea, but it flops about so much that any impact is just lost. It's also pretty self-reflexive - Ben Elton, who famously had major problems conceiving with his partner, writes a book/screenplay about a writer who is having terrible problems with conceiving and writes a screenplay about his problems...So much is glossed over, too, or just not fleshed out enough. I never got the impression that Joley Richardson's character was that desperate for a baby, or that the IVF was much more than a humorous inconvenience and opportunity for ejaculation jokes...

I only watched this because I harbour a life-long Thing for Hugh Laurie - but honestly? Stick to watching him in House instead. It's so much better, and the stubble suits him, besides.
