There comes a time in every teacher??'s life when he must face his Nemesis -- the four-yearly Ofsted Inspection. The immediate b??te noire of Head of Sixth Form, Peter Maxwell, is the attractive and vivacious Sally Meninger. Out on the town one night to relieve the tension, Maxwell finds her in an intimate situation with her fellow Inspector, Alan Whiting. When Whiting is found stabbed to death at the school, Maxwell cannot help but notice that Sally is not as distraught as might be expected. He begins to understand why she appears unmoved when he catches Sally in flagrante with his Headteacher, James Diamond. Events move quickly and Diamond is arrested on suspicion of the murder of Whiting. But is it that simple? Aided by his inside informant, lover DS Jacquie Carpenter, Maxwell sets out to prove that his colleague is innocent. And the only way to do it is to take on the Inspectors one by one.

Product Description

"Any high school teacher will probably bristle when informed that an "accreditation year" is on the horizon. Occurring every four or five years, the process of preparing for renewing a school's accreditation and the subsequent visit of the inspection team is a tense time.Shortened tempers and head splitting tension become the order of the day for the school's faculty and administration. Mystery writer M.J. Trow, himself a British high school teacher, not only captures the angst associated with this evaluation procedure but he has the delightful temerity of "knocking off" some of the inspectors. No matter on what side of the Atlantic they teach, this is a mystery secondary school instructors will absolutely love." -- ILoveAMystery --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maxwell's Inspection a must to read 10 Jan 2004
Trow's description of how Ofsted inspections affect a school is close to perfect. Most teachers will recognise the panic from senior management and cynical ambivalence of experienced teachers drawing together for a drink at the local pub. The detail put into describing even minor characters (from police officers to barmen, to the former student who knows more than anyone suspects) paints a picture that we can all relate to. The characters are so well portrayed that you can't help but feel that you know them - or at least know someone very like them!
The plot is brilliant, once again we are left guessing until the very end about the identity of the murderer, and then kicking ourselves because we didn't spot the clues.
Trow is a masterful weaver of intrigue and his hero Maxwell is a giant amongst dwarves in the town of Seaford.

I love M.J. Trow's thrillers. Such a pity they are so difficult to come by. They are always extremely entertaining and funny with clever historical references. This book is no exception.
