In an age of immediacy the idea of waiting sounds hopelessly outdated. But that said, there is something to be said about anticipation. Such is the case with Maxwell’s new album. Yes, after an extended hiatus the sexy ambassador of soul has returned with a brand new look and a fresh yet deliciously vintage sound. The same artist who brought us classic songs like “Sumthin’ ... Product Description

Marvin Gaye's heir apparent buys time with this seven-song, 34-minute EP. In 1996, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite showcased a rising star, and the sumptuous early '70s soul-moves here underline the potential. A bit of a tease, then, but just the ticket to spread the word about this remarkable newcomer. --Jeff Bateman

5.0 out of 5 stars In one word? ::SPEECHLESS:: 18 May 2002
Format:Audio CD
Maxwell's talent goes beyond that which can be described through anything but essence. His heart and soul pour into every note he utters and it is obvious through each song that the man has a lot of brains behind his music. His style, range and sheer blessed talent is something I can honestly say has me hooked into his music.
Despite the fact I have become very aware he isn't all that well known in the music world (- believe me I have LOOKED for his work. Mind you, it could just be boring Eastbourne), this album is more than a "worth it" purchase. Each one of his live recordings are just pure and simply astonishing. Not just one song- but the entire collection; short as it is, it is timeless.
Among my personal favourites is the funky tune 'Gotta Get: Closer' and the sensual 'Lady Suite'. The heart-warming 'Whenever, Wherever, Whatever' is soul at its purest and his amazing version of 'A Woman's Worth' is most definately a moment you wont forget. Very distinct of his style and ability and above all it trully is soulful.
This IS real Soul. Incredible, Maxwell =) Just plain incredible...

5.0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet - best MTV unplugged session 29 Dec 2005
Format:Audio CD
Yes, there are only 8 tracks on this recording and the whole thing lasts only 34 minutes; and yes, Maxwell's debut Urban Hang Suite was a high standard to surpass - but with the release of this recording Maxwell has really surpassed himself (and countless others).

Although rarely mentioned among the greatest MTV unplugged recordings, this is absolutley the best of the whole bunch of them bar none.
Where do I start? Fantastic instrumentation that moves you in the right places, and gets you grooving in others. The band, including horns and strings, is just perfect. Backing vocals credibly recreate the mood of the "Urban Hang Suite" album, and Maxwell himself is on top form.
The re-work of Kate Bush's "This woman's work" is simply a stroke of genius, with Maxwell holding a flawless falsetto throughout. As for the live interpretation of "wherever, whenever, whatever", if the strings don't get your hairs tingling, the vocal performance certainly will.
This album is excellent and everyone should have it! 34 minutes worth making time for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maxwell is the man 4 May 2001
By Mrs P
Format:Audio CD
Maxwell has taken soul to a whole new level, the indeed gut wrenching rendition of 'this womans work' is amazing (for want of a better word), 'whenever, wherever, whatever' is the love song to top all love songs and as for 'sumthin, sumthin? pure brilliance. Short as the album may be it is one of the greatest soul albums ever, buy it!!! like now!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect performances all round. 13 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Despite being an owner of Urban Hang Suite for several years, I continually passed this by. I finally bought it a couple of months ago and instantly loved it. Its not just Maxwell's voice- sublime as it is- its the performances as a whole. The arrangement on all of these songs is superb, obviously performed by a group who know the songs backwards and enjoy them. They effortlessly blend into each other- but not in a bad way. Just perfect continuity. As a fan of Kate Bush I was intrigued to hear Maxwell's version of 'This Women's Work' and found the song to be transformed into a beautiful heartfelt plea. But then next to that you get uptempo songs that just make you want to dance. Altogether too short but makes you want to write to Maxwell and beg him to perform in a town near you.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest voice of our "lifetime" 5 May 2005
Format:Audio CD
this CD, and im not exaggerating changed my life, well in the sense that I myself am also a singer/songwriter, and before that, i listened to music with no real depth, and my mum handed me this cd, and when i first heard it, it blew me away, he is by far the most amazing male vocalist along with mariah carey as female, to go on to inspire the industry, his range and tone is Unbelievable
, and every song he sings, every lyric, is filled with emotion and spirit, especially his version of "This Woman's Work" which i have also performed at shows etc. he is an amazing artist, and deserves much more exposure rater then being an underground act, he deserves success and more exposure, this is what the industry SHOULD be, not people that lyp sync and sell their image, but true talent, live insturments, a voice,
i highly recommend this, his NOW and Embrya album are also amazing, can't wait for his next recording!

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING!!!! 15 Aug 2001
Format:Audio CD
This CD is at times beyond words. 'This woman's work' has to be one of the best songs of the 90s. I first heard it in 'love and baskekball' and I hunted the song down. I was estatic to find the added bonus of the rest of the songs on this CD. They're all brilliant! 'This woman work' still makes me weep. 'Sumthin' sumthin' also stands out... damn, they're all good! The one bad thing about this CD- IT'S TOO DARN SHORT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like an evening of seduction. 6 Feb 2005
Format:Audio CD
If you find yourself unconvinced by Maxwell's genre and talent then I urge to try this album. He will, as I have suggested, seduce you. There are a range of beautiful, exquisite and melodic soul and r+b tracks here, some will get you up and at it while others will have you wanting to quietly contemplate.
The journey here is fast and differently paced but breathless and worthy. Maxwell also introduces you to a cover version of "This Woman's Work", a classic Kate Bush track ( a beuatifully unusual British Female singer of the 70's/80's and early 90's) He achieves an almost perfect rival thanks to his immense range and delicious arrangement. It's a beautiful song, it was featured in the bratpack 80's movie "She's having a baby" starring Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern. Maxwell manages to imbue it with greater depth of feeling simply because a man is singing it. Stunning and quite amazing.
