5.0 out of 5 stars Persevere and you will be rewarded! 7 Feb 2013
Format:Audio CD
The 4th and 5th Symphonies are slightly harder nuts to crack, but persevere and you will be rewarded! I sometimes feel that modern composers have trouble composing slow movements of symphonies in comparison which the great symphonists of the classical and romantic periods, but here once again, both in the four movement 4th and in the single span of the 5th, Maxwell Davies shows that he is truly adept at composing slow music. The music may not have the initial attraction of the 3rd Symphony, but give it time and it will make a lasting impression. Wonderful playing from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia respectfully under the baton of the composer himself, make this a very valuable re-issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars More musical marmite 17 Sep 2013
By Philip Chadwick VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Wonderful music and beautifully played and recorded.
Just get some - it's a steal at this price - put it on and try not to listen to it as music.
Bizarre idea I know but try it - let it sort of seep in and work its magic.
Oh and do the same a couple of times if it doesn't insinuate itself straight off.
Trust me, I paint landscapes - which is exactly what Maxwell Davies does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for Naxos 21 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I'm delighted that Naxos has acquired the Maxwell Davies recordings. Of all the relatively modern British composers, MD has always struck out on his own particularly idiosyncratic path. From ragtime to the sweep of symphonic form; from dramatic burlesque to heart-breaking simplicity; from school choir to finely-tuned string quartet - MD has covered it all, and always with a certain style. Far removed from the dry-as-dust brand of repetition-as-music brigade, or the pseudo-mystical art-is-religion (or vice-versa) crew.
The performances on this disc are first-class, and the recording is excellent. Enough said!

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging but rewarding listen. 27 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
A challenging listen, however if you get the opportunity to hear them live, as I did the fifth, you can appreciate the complexities involved.
