Superb performances of a selection of early chamber Music by Maxwell Davies. The works for String Quartet make an excellent appendix to the Maggini's set of Naxos Quartets. The Music here is often thorny and bone dry, but the fire in the belly of the young composer is beyond doubt. The masterpiece, though, is "Hymnos" for Clarinet and Piano; and there is no greater praise for this performance than to say it is the equal of Roger Heaton and Stephen Pruslin's incendiary performance on Clarinet Classics (in fact, I'm tempted to say that Ian Pace even outshines Pruslin here!)
A glorious disc for anyone not expecting "Farewell to Stromness"!
