Maxwell : This is the story of Robert Maxwell (David Suchet), a modern ruler who succumbed to his own ambition. By the early 90s his media empire included some of the most famous names in the media landscape: Macmillan Publishing to national newspapers like the Daily Mirror and the New York Daily News. Basil Brookes joins Maxwell as his financial director and witnesses Maxwell's financial shenanigans during his fierce rivalry with fellow mogul Rupert Murdoch. He optimistically pursues glamorous secretary Andrea Martin and alienates his wife. By the end of the film the previously omnipotent Maxwell, who was able to have bankers, suppliers and competitors dancing to his tune, was powerless, held in contempt by his bankers and employees and was finally alleged to have comitted suicide in a fall from his boat. In closing newsclips it is seen that Maxwell was alleged to have embezzled millions from his employees' pension funds to keep his ailing businesses afloat.
