Maxtor have produced a winner with this drive. Gb/£ it is one of the most cost effective storage solutions out there. But this is no clunky tape backup. Instead what you get is an attractive, minimalist design with tons of storage space. The brushed aluminium case contains a fast and extremely quiet hard drive that connects to your computer using either USB or Firewire (they supply you with both cables). The set up is a cinch and I really cannot find a single fault with this unit. On top of all that Maxtor provide something that I haven't seen in many years...a printed manual. I would give this device more than 10 stars if I could.

Having purchased my PC about a year ago, I had got to the point where I had almost filled my 160GB on the two disks (120GB/40GB). The problem was that I was suffering from a downgrade of performance, and couldn't defrag without deleting or saving the files externally. As I am in the midst of ripping my entire CD collection (35GB and counting), I needed to get some files off. This little beauty solved the problem at a stroke. Cheaper than DVD+RW per GB, I was able to back up my machine as it stood, and still had half the disk left! Having backed up a couple of very large video files (20GB each approx, though you need to format to NTFS first), I then ran them off the external drive and the performance was fine. Even when I dropped the drive onto the hard floor, it still worked! Easy to set up, and good to look at as well! I suspect I will be back for another in a year's time.

Excellent value for money, I bought it when it was around £200 mark. Look at the price now? WOW! It's quiet, fast and very spacious, defrags really fast (using Diskeeper lite) and it's so easy to use, one touch and your backed up, exactly what it says on the box (as they say). It looks the mutz nutz too with the brushed silver finish, which I'm sure even the "laydeez" will appreciate. Connects via USB and Firewire and has the cables supplied. If you're in any doubt as to what external hard drive to go for, go for this, you won't regret it. Don't be put off by poor review by the MAC user, no idea why it's not been succesful for that customer, maybe MAC's have their faults (yet they don't like to admit it). Go for it, you will not regret it!
